I agree with all the posts here. My first reply is what a bunch of spoiled women. In fact our country expects a short war, a easy war and no one hurt in any war these days. Look at Germany and Japan, we are still there, 60 years later.
The reality is that these wives can make it pretty miserable for the soldiers over there even if they are being stupid. Once the divorces starting happening it doesn't matter if the troops are just doing their jobs. Broken families is the reality. We have to set the picture from the beginning. Tell them the worst case and then if someone gets to come home earlier then that is all the better. It probably doesn't help that 1/75 is back in Savannah already.

I have to say that I don't think this is a new feeling. I remember at the end of 1992 the 10th Mountain was set to deploy to Somalia around early or mid December to join the Marines already in country. Because of the complaints of soldiers and particularly the family the schedule was changed so that the 10th Mountain troops did not deploy for a real world mission until after the holidays. I did not hear any complaints coming from the families of the Marines who did spend the holidays away from their families.

quote: “We need to pull these guys out and put some other troops in here who are trained for peacekeeping, because our first impulse is to kill,” Sgt. 1st Class Eric Wright said in Iraq. “My guys question why we are going from warriors to peacekeepers, because the belief in what was told to us was that we would fight and win and go home and that someone else would do this.”
Exactly which troops do we have who are trained in peacekeeping? Is there an MOS for it? Is there a peacekeeping unit? I would hope that all of our combat troops have the first impulse to kill, but in WWII our combat troops made the transition quite well. Should we have a "peacekeeping" division that trains at a peacekeeping version of NTC or JRTC, only instead of battle against an enemy they practice peacekeeping?

I would be stupefied if there was a poll indicating that some wives didn't want their spouses home.
So there are two Duhs I see: One, . . "Wives would like their husbands home" . . DUH! . . . . and second: "...because I don’t believe it’s safe", DUH! DUH! . . . we are at war!
While the feelings are reasonable given the circumstances, surly no one should be surprised by them, at least I wasn't.

Mazzi
Thanks for being a voice of reason and calm amongst the whining churlish (got that word out of my "learn a word a day book")behavior of the wives at Stewart and Campbell(I can't believe a generals wife is whining, years ago that would have ended his career). You are a class act.

Hubby prepared me well. I went through this last year, but this time around it is a lot longer deployment. No matter what, I stand behind him. Besides, he is with the best, so why should I worry?
