" Army Maj. Gen. John R. Vines for appointment to the rank
of lieutenant general and assignment as commanding general,
XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg, Fort Bragg, N.C."
Nothing has been published regarding LTG McNeil who has been Corps CG
and deployed the HQ to Afghanistan last year.

McNeil may stay as commander of Afghanistan or be assigned a position within CENTCOM. A lot of senior officers are about to play musical chairs.

General Vines is awesome. Took 4-325 AIR into Pananma and GW1. Commanded a Ranger Company in his younger days, 2nd BDE of the 101st, and was ADC-O and CG of the 82nd Airborne Division. This is a natural progression, and much deserved.
MG Vines spent his first 3 years in a mech infantry unit, but for most of his career since JAN 75, has been on status at either the Ranger School, in the Ranger Regiment, JSCOC at Bragg, or in the 82nd. Exceptions were for two years in the mid 80's for time with a BCT brigade at Fort Dix followed by CGSC, a year at the Naval War College in the early 90's, and Brigade command at Campbell. That's like, 23 YEARS on jump status.
I got to 4-325 AIR in 1994, too late to have worked for him, but was told that some of his soldiers had JOHN R VINES on their ID tags, where religion is usually stamped. True? I don't know, but for even a "war story" like that to be around three years after the man changed command is a strong testament to what his troops thought of him.

He had the Division from AUG 00 - OCT 02 (and he was BG(P) when he took command). He's been commanding Coalition Task Force - 82, Afghanistan since OCT 2002.

CTF 82 has been inactivated and most of the personnel fell under the JTF. I am not sure where LTG MCNeill will go.

When did CTF 82 stand down? Their PAO was publishing news releases as late as 25 APR 03.

MG Vines took over command from LTG McNeill in Afghanistan this week. He will now command the forces in Afghanistan as well as command the XVIII Airborne Corps.
