So here is the deal, for the past couple of months I have been looking at some of the National Guard units around my current home state, to see the capabilities, former deployments, and future training opportunities for me. I am non prior service and 31y/o male currently employed as a paramedic wanting a little more I decided to join the National Guard so, I have completed the ASVAB, down between two MOSs and my recruiter starts talking about going to MEPS. Still no big deal until my recruiter tells me to lie at MEPS about having broken my hand 13 years ago that required a bone graph to heal (I have completed a full recovery and have never had a problem with it and I was cleared by my doctor after my surgery) and to lie about being arrested when I was 18 for possession of alcohol (which I paid a fine and it isn’t even on my DOJ record- I worked for the Department of the Interior for a time being which required a DOJ check- even though it doesn’t show up I still admit it). He told me if I admit these things I could be barred from service and/or it could/would take to long for them to research the two incidents. I believe he is selling me a line of bull so he can make a quick sale and get credit for recruiting me.
So what should I do, I want to just tell the truth but fear being barred from service

Basically your recruiter is doing the right thing...Sometimes doing the "right" thing is making a "SMART" judgment call...
The two things you mention are small insignificant with respect to more serious things that MEPS sees...these have nothing to do with you getting in and doing your job properly....
So why even bring up this old crap???..it's just going to slow down the enlistmest process and bog-down more time and more tax payers money and clog up the process with more paper work and waivers...There is no honor in that and it's a waste of everyones time...
Just bite the bullet and do what needs to be done to better serve your country....this is small potatoes..it's not like your trying to hide a feleny and murder conviction...
The ARMY has asked of it's men to do much more devious stuff for the flag then what you have to not mention at MEPS..

Chris

I can pretty much guarantee that if you were busted and paid a fine it is out there and will be found. As for the broken hand, x-rays will show that to any doctor who knows what he is doing. Maybe one or both will cause a small delay for your report date. But the general consensus among those of us here who have been asked these type of questions before is don't lie. If they find out you lied(and failing to include something during the physical is a lie by omission) is more likely to cause you more headaches and/or prevent you from enlisting than being honest about your past history.

thanks guys
what you have said here backs up my thoughts. I know to many guys out who are all prior service who left of medicals due to injury and now get a disability check. God forbid I wouldn't want that to happen but I would get screwed out of that by lying on the way in.
thanks again

Jay, the thing is they will find out about the two things he mentioned. A mostly incompetent doctor can read an x-ray well enough to see an old break, particularly with a bone graft.

And I don't care what they say about juvenile records, a military background checks, particularly one related to a security clearance if he needs one, can still turn up a record of a bust. In this case, he was busted and paid a fine(which presumably involved some sort of guilty plea or verdict by a judge). Don't bet your future on them not finding that type of arrest simply because you were a juvenile at the time.

Bgrady, I broke my wrist in high school and it healed without any problems or deformity. However, a doctor x-rayed the same wrist about 16 months ago and could tell it had been broken even though I forgot to mention it to him. If for any reason he has to have his hand x-rayed they will find out and if he lied, by commission or omission, he is much more likely to get in trouble for it.

Given the length of time and the lack of problems there is no reason why this should prevent someone from enlisting. You could go back to your civilian doctor, have him do a report of the break, the surgery and your complete recovery, and take it with you so that if it comes up you can just pull it out.

I gotta disagree with 509. There is a 0% chance that you would ever have to have that wrist x-rayed. Unless you broke it again. So if it doesnt affect your abilty dont mention it. The Army is pretty damm picky when it comes to prior medical conditions. I have seen more than one guy get disqualified. In the end four years down the road you break the same wrist. It gets x-rayed the Dr. says you broke it before. Say "Oh yea I forget about that." Unless your Dr is some kind of A hole nothing more will be said about it. Also if it were to end up being some kind of permanet diability, if you broke you wrist in the line of duty. Its still gonna be considered service connected.
As far as the alcohol thing goes fess up, it wont hurt you. Even though if you didnt, I really dont think it would ever catch up with you. I held a secret clearance. I forget to mention several things I got in trouble for as a minor. Did almost six years on three different periods of service. So even if it was found out. Unless you have been some kinda dirtbag while in the Army. Not much is gonna be said about it. Once again unless you have some kinda A hole for a CO.
