I wasn't expressing anyone's ulterior motives. I've never met the man and have no base for any negative remarks. I was just expressing a gut reaction.

| That's a great "Old School" idea, MM - But many of these new guys would shit themselves if you suggest that to them... I dunno what to think about this issue, Mark. I'd definitely agree it's a pretty fast move for the Association, based on how much they drag feet in other areas.

As a member who is sending in his money for Life Membership today, I'll add my 2 cents.
To me it doesn't sound like an efficient use of funds. I can see paying a portion of the Exec Dir's mortgage and utilities, but buying a house? Office space sounds like a great idea, whether on post or off. This would give 24 hour accessibility to any staff member who needs it, without disturbing the Exec Dir or having to request explicit permission for each such occasion. If the office is in someone's house, there are a number of issues that get in the way of the usefulness of the space to the Assoc.
In the memo posted on page 1 of this thread, the Exec Dir states that this would bring the Assoc up to current practices by other National Associations. Do other Associations really have a house for their Exec Dir? To me, when 1/4 of the funds of the Assoc are used in this way, it just reeks of impropriety and puts that doubt in the back of my mind that this is an organization with MY best interests at heart.

Having 'hours' of availability really adds structure to the whole thing. I know I sure wouldnt want to be conducting a personal party and have someone drop into the HQ. I see no reason to believe that anything is not above board, the executive director is trying to find a solution to a problem. I just disagree that the solution he has offered is the only one or the right one, which is why I feel more discussion is required. In one day we've raised more possiblilities here so why would we not do the due dilligence. The very fact that some people MAY see this as something less than square should make the board members nervous to quickly push it through without a little scrutiny.

| Given the amount of the expenditure relative to the overall assets you are probably right about apprising the general membership about this before making the purchase. I don't actually worry too much about depleting the account for two reasons. First, the $800,000 figure is total assets, not money in the account. The house would be an asset of the Association so the figure would not decrease, but given the current housing market, is likely to increase. Second, as alluded to in the e-mail the income to the Association continues to grow at a healthy rate. Mark, you have been able to here this discussed, but just based on the proposal sent out I don't see where this would be the ED's house. In fact, if it were in a commercial area the Association would probably have to get a variance in order for the Director to live there. As I read what is written it would be strictly an office for the Association and his staff . I will put forward one argument that would make such an arrangement a minor convenience for the Association. When the National President and/or Board members are in town(such as for AA Week) it could be allowed for two or three to stay there instead of the hotel. But overall, I do think that getting a regular office, even if that means renting it, would be a better option.
