FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Officials at Fort Bragg say a brigade of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division will return to Fort Bragg from duty in Iraq two months earlier than scheduled.

82nd spokesman Maj. Tom Earnhardt said Friday that the division’s 1st brigade will leave Iraq in mid-July. He said the unit will be replaced by the 4th brigade of the 1st Cavalry Division, based at Fort Hood, Texas.

The 1st brigade deployed last year and wasn’t expected to return until September. The unit of 3,500 paratroopers is based at Tallil Air Base in southern Iraq but operates all over the country protecting convoys along the roads from Kuwait and Jordan into Baghdad.

Good for the troopers of 1st BCT. We fell under those guys in Iraq and they definitely kept us out of a lot of pain in the ass stuff that the leg battalion we fell under tried to push on us. Definitely did what they could to take care of their fellow paratroopers.

"American Parachutists...devils in baggy pants...are less than 100 meters from my outpost line. I can't sleep at night; they pop up from nowhere and we never know when or how they will strike next. Seems like the black-hearted devils are everywhere..."
