To some, being in a leadership position has very little to do with leading. But it has a whole lot to do with power!

They tried this shit in my unit when we were over in Iraq.

The G3 SGM and I teamed up and got it shut down "Most Ricky-Tick."

Looks like a failure on two fronts.

1. The command staff failed to read the regs and understand the esprit de corps issues behind combat earned unit patches

2. The SSG failed to maintain his military bearing and simply work up the chain of command with a calm attitude and the regulation printed. Yes, it can be tough to go up against your CoC but I am sure that he would have prevailed long before any real action would be taken against him and it would have kept this issue internal.

We have far too many bigger fish to fry that cry out for public scrutiny to waste time and energy on this.

You would think the CO would worry about more important things like, oh I dont know, maybe fighting the war.

Oh and I remember the push from the chain of command for United Way, AUSA, and the 82nd ABN association. Like 10thSFG stated, I donated directly to the charity of my choice and I saw the leadership "punish" me for not playing their game. I had some extra duty given to me and had to circumvent them just to get schools I wanted.

I hope his CO likes the rank he currently has. Stuff like this tends to keep officers from getting promoted.

Its only paranoia when they prove you wrong.

If things in the Army are still as I remember them the future promotion status of this Co. may depend on if he is a popular ring knocker or not!

I wish I could say stuff like this was rare, but it's not.  When I was in Kuwait the brigade I was in (115th FA Bde, WYARNG) had a "patching ceremony" at the 6 month mark into our tour.  Supposedly the commander declared that 6 months into our tour we were authorized to wear the 115th Bde patch on our right sleeves and we had a cheesy ceremony in the hot August sun to commemorate it.

I thought the whole thing was silly - the FWTS SSI is a former wartime service patch, right?  So my argument was we didn't "earn" the patch until we were back home after our deployment (that's the way we did it in the 5/19th SFG.)  I just thought "it makes no sense to wear a combat patch while you're still in theater."

Well, no biggie, I already had my SF patch and that's what I wore.  Nobody hassled me on it and if they had, I'd have politely told them that the AR could not be more clear:  A soldier who is authorized to wear more than 1 patch can choose which patch to wear.

But another guy in my unit, an E-8 who worked at a different camp and who wore the 1st SOCOM (Rocking Horse) patch from Desert Storm or Panama before our deployment, showed up at my office one day wearing the brigade patch on both sleeves.  I said "what gives?"  He answered that his CO (different from mine as we were at different camps) had directed that everyone in his command wear the brigade patch, period.

I would say the SSG could probably have handled this differently, and he certainly drew unwanted fire on himself for his letter.  But his CoC is and was flat out wrong.

I agree with pretty much everyone else. The soldier was correct in fighting the mandatory wear of that one particular combat patch, but I don't think we'll ever get the whole story on whether he really took it up his COC or not. He said he did, and his COC said he didn't.

But whether he likes it or not, he is probably going to get punished for this for quite a while. Not necessarily UCMJ or formal punishment, but like 10thSFG said, he will probably be voluntold for quite a few things. Good luck to him.

And I have to add. I am deployed to a totally different area than the rest of my unit. It is just my NCOIC and myself here, so when my BDE CSM visited, he let me know I was authorized the wear of my BDE's combat patch. I think he would have liked me to wear it, especially since I deal with all the bigwigs from my and other units. Well, I told him that if he took his Ranger scroll off and put the BDE patch on, then I would take my 82nd patch off. He politely declin
