Spc. Ross McGinnis, who was killed Dec. 4, 2006, in Iraq when he smothered a grenade with his body, will receive the Medal of Honor, sources told Army Times. McGinnis, 19, is the second soldier to receive the nation’s highest valor award for actions while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Sgt. 1st Class Paul Ray Smith, who was killed April 4, 2003, fighting off insurgents in a fierce firefight south of Baghdad, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor two years after he died. http://www.armytimes.com/news/2008/04/army_mcginnisMOH_050508w/

Such an incredible example of self sacrifice... RIP Spc McGinnis, you shall not be forgotten.

| What greater sacrifice then to lay down your life for your team? Rest in peace- your family is proud of what you did.
All the way, sir!!!

And unfortunatly so the presentation goes to another fallen heros family. I am quite sure there has been valor out their to merit the awarding of the CMH to a LIVE hero. How about that young Marine who fell on the grenade and lived???

Agree Al.... I know we have all read a few stories where some Soldier, Airman, Marine, Sailor has done the extrordinary. It is almost as if they are hesitant with recognising the level of valor.

Al, you make an excellent point there Bro; we need to have servicemen or women who lived after they're heroic deeds get the CMH.
I'm Surprised Panama's still sea level, after all the Push Ups I did down there.

I agree it seems like they, the powers that be are setting an unrealistic and dangerous precedent by only awarding the MOH to those who die as a result of their valorous acts...don't want a proliferation of 18 or 19 year old kids thinking they have to jump on a grenade! How about as Al stated the guy who risks his life to deflect a blast or maybe kick one away or some other such equally brave act? Bravery should not equal self-sacrifice in every event.
Stand in the door!

| The Army may be bending over backwards to avoid cheapening the medal. During Vietnam 1000 DSC's were awarded - 400 posthumous. Since WW2 854 Medals of Honor have been awarded, 528 posthumously. You just dont wake up one day and say I am going to get a Medal of Honor. The story of these medals is heroism without regard to one's own safety. The men that receive these medals dont complain about not getting a higher award. Here are some citations to put this in context. http://www.combatwife.net/hastingscitations.htm
