| We've had a few C-17s hit in both theatres. The most famous was a McChord bird absorbing a SA-7 hit in number 2 engine after takeoff from BIAP. She 180'd and came back in on fire but the main damage was to the engine with shrapnel all down the left side of the aircraft. While deployed with the AD two summers ago, we had a couple hit by small arms fire with airdropping over A'stan. One, was hit in the leading edge of the left wing in between number 1-2 engine. The 37mm failed to detonate and was found rattling around next to the fuel tank. Talk about LUCK! I've been shot at several times, but fortunalty the gomers aiming was just a bit off! Once they retire that ol Herc, I'm sure she'll find a place of honor up at the AF museum at Wright-Pat.

| We're now getting more of the new fielded C-130J models for our airborne. I am astounded about what they have done with this legendary airframe. In my opinion, the power and control of the Herc-Juliet is simply awesome. The shark-fin 6 blade prop creates an obscene amount of power. Unfortunately, pilots who are still getting the feel for this airframe create "Vomit Comets" in the back with paratroopers as the plane is so responsive to a nudge of the throttle. My brethren in the Air Force tell me when the last C-17 is grounded and retired, a C-130 will be there to pick them up...

Nauseous from nap-of-the-earth, swallowing Copenhagen, and that distinct and omnipresent aroma of fuel, bladder about to burst, legs completely numb from the combined weight of the ruck atop your ruck, and yet how we love and miss old Dirty Herc.
