| While I consider myself relatively knowledgeable of all things military, I never knew SDFs existed until this week. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of or experience with SDFs? http://www.gosdf.com/

Yep, Ga. has a good SDF, but if you are physically and mentally qualifies you would be better off getting paid and being in the Guard. The SDF cannot be deployed outside the State, is not authorized drill pay, except for a few uniform items must purchase their own uniforms and gear, and has an annoying habit of promoting people to ranks that they would not be qualified for in the real military. I'll be damned if I will salute a 19 year old SDF Lieutenant or stand at parade rest for a female SGM who can barely fir in their uniform. That said I have met some very competent people who for various reasons serve in their State SDF and do a good job. They can perform well many of the support tasks for events that require Guard participation allowing Guard Soldiers to concentrate on such things as riot control, humanitarian asistance, etc. If you are interested give them a look see and decide if it's right for you.

| Yes, I belong to one. The Texas State Guard. Our mission is to support local authorities in the event of riots, disaster, etc as well as supporting the Texas National Guard in their homeland defense mission and assume the homeland defense mission while they are deployed/tasked elsewhere, such as we did when we deployed in support od Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. We fall under the Texas Adjutant Generals office just like the National and Air National guard. We are part of the standing plans the AG's office has for many contingencies. We currently have many of our soldiers deployed , with pay, in support of Operation Border Star 5, a border security op here in Teaxs. They are on 6 month rotations. While I know of no 19 year old Lt's or fat-ass CSM's ( ours is a 3rd ACR Desert Storm vet with 23 yaers active duty) I will not deny the occasional anomaly. In my Regiment we try to weed out the members of the "good 'ol boys " club, and receive a great deal of respect and support from the National Guardsmen we support and share the armory with,, even having them ask us to provide training for them. It's a good option for those who still want to proudly wear the uniform and serve yet are unable to do so in the Guard, Reserves or Active Duty Army for various reasons.

Well I guess according to the description I am a member of the Nebraska State defense force. The State Patrol provides all of those services whenever requested. HMMM maybe it is time to ask for a raise. Peanut pay isn't cutting it anymore.
