Officials break ‘hallowed ground’Construction begins

By THE BAYONET, Lori Egan

Construction begins for Armor School basic combat training barracks

The Armor barracks complex groundbreaking at Harmony Church Tuesday was a historic event for the Army because it signifies Fort Benning’s transition to the Maneuver Center of Excellence and the colocation of Infantry and Armor training.

The significance of the day was not lost on 18-year-old Pvt. Nicolas Torres, who helped set up the tents and hand out programs for the ceremony.

“It’s historic and makes me proud I enlisted as an Infantryman,” he said. “We’re on the battlefield with tankers and now we’ll be training with them. It really is one force — one fight.”

Both the Infantry and Armor chiefs spoke about working as a combined arms team.

“As an Infantryman with many years in the Army, I will never go on any battlefield again without some tanks to support me,” said Maj. Gen. Walter Wojdakowski, Fort Benning’s commanding general, “to bail me out … to provide the shock effect and the thunderbolt action a tank provides

Not Harmony Church, that is where I went through Basic, give them the Sand Hilton, and move the Infantry back to the WWII barracks.

All America lies at the end of the wilderness road, and ou past is not a dead past, but still lives in us. Our forefathers had civilization inside themselves, the wild outside. We live in the civilization they created, but within us the wilderness still lingers. What they dreamed, we live, and what they lived we dream. T.K. Whipple, Study Out the Land.

There are no more WWII barracks.  Even the foundations are long gone.

So, what will become of Ft. Knox?
