| http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,330362,00.html A U.S. military official says that one Russian Tupolev 95 buzzed the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz twice, at a low altitude of about 2,000 feet, while another bomber circled about 50 nautical miles out. The official was speaking on condition of anonymity because the reports on the flights were classified as secret. Read more....

| CNO Roughhead said in a briefing before a few press reporters yesterday at the 5 sided puzzle palace that there was nothing unusual about the fact that the Russians flew over the carrier other than it had been a while since they had done anything like that. He stated he didn't think it was prudent to do so, but didn't think it was anything to get alarmed or go to GQ over... "we responded just like we train".... The press seemed determined to get in questions about airspace over the carrier being restricted in any way and if this needs to be something the US should be concerned about in addressing existing relationship with Russia...friggin goonie press geeks all of'm. I remember being shadowed a few times on IKE in the Med. by Russian frigates that would slowly cruise right up to within 500 feet of us....just another out and about day on that pig! Their fleet, from what I saw of it, always looked like it could use some paint and more attention to corrosion....maybe.... because that is what I was doing all the time...

Ted (2/13/2008) Do we ever buzz them? If I were a bett'n man I would say that is a big Ahh-firmma-titty, but you won't hear anyone from the Navy admit it! PC answer to that is: To much at stake in the bigger scheme of things for us to be pulling any shannanagins like that! Reality answer to that is: To test ones opponent is to find ones weaknesses! I can't speak about any bravado that goes on today, but when I was in, Yes...the ole cat and mouse game could get out of hand and did on several occasions....I suspect our political relationship with the Russians will need some fine tuning in the coming months!

It sound like we missed an opportunity for a live fire exercise. No would ever think to steal a russian bomber and fly it into something. Sound familiar to anyone?

To find a supercarrier in the open ocean is a very difficult task. It is like finding a needle in a haystack, and the fact that our fliers were able to do so speaks highly of their skill http://en.rian.ru/analysis/20080213/99111861.html Obviously the general is ate up in his thinking/pride when it comes to being experienced at finding a ship as large as a friggin carrier in the open ocean, but then again I'm sure it's a controlled release statement on their accomplishment of just getting back into the swing of patrolling the oceans again...
