Below is a security warning sent out to all of our employees today. Obviously, they are not going to give specifics nor are they releasing who, or how they learned about it. But since it is from our internal security network it is not a scam or prank.

MS2 Security & Emergency Services has learned that certain groups considered hostile toward the U.S. and its allies have been monitoring social networking websites to gather details that could be used for adverse intentions. Examples of the sites targeted by these organizations include Facebook, MySpace and Friends Reunited. These hostile groups are using hundreds of false accounts to access the personal pages of military personnel with profiles on these sites.

As defense contractors, this threat is also a concern for us. MS2 Security & Emergency Services asks employees to exercise caution when accessing social sites. Be sure to limit the amount of emphasis you place on where you work and avoid specifics about yourself as much as possible. For further information, contact the Security representative for your line of business.

I'm Surprised Panama's still sea level, after all the Push Ups I did down there.

This information came to light a little over a month ago and the threat is real.  I have even deleted my own Myspace account which had many active duty troops who linked through it.  While many people are careful to allow only people they actually know as members of their social network, others play a numbers game, collecting "friends" in a competitive nature.  Such behavior puts the network at risk.

I use facebook and honestly I think having it set so that your 'friends' can see your profile but not the public at large is a good way to go on even a regular basis.

This kind of thing makes me wonder about the PUBLIC nature of this site ... I have discussed this in the past about making the site require a login at the very least but it got put down by the general membership. I think the key on forums like this is just being careful about how much personal information we offer. You can be specific without being dead on giving it away.

Personally, I refuse to alter my behavior online or anywhere else just because some goat-f*cking, cave-dweller somewhere might be 'monitoring' this or any other site. If that puts me at risk, so be it. F*ck them and f*ck that! The way I see it, if we have to change our way of doing things just because we are scared of a bunch of terrorists, then the terrorists win

Red,

I don't think that the warning is trying to get you to change your conduct.

We all have always preached COMSEC and OPSEC. We BTDTs have always recognized it. In this era of ID theft and pretending to be someone that their not this is just another reminder to remember what we have always been taught and I would hope have practiced.

One of the real problems is that the younger generation doesn't understand it.

How many of those old WWI and WWII posters can you remember? What about during the cold war.

My favorite was always "Loose Lips Sink Ships".

This is nothing more than a reminder to not put yourself at risk.

If your out there posting all of your personal information on line for everyone, they so be it.

Yeah... arctic is right on. These days the younger generation thinks nothing of parking a wee bit too much personal information out in the clear.

One of the worst situations is where family members who are proud of friends and family serving spout off about things they dont know enough about and learn the hard way about OPSEC.

THIS is where I think the warning is coming from, ID theft is a crime and nothing to laugh at but in this TANGO warning, I think the issue is the bad guys gaining intel about troops in the field.

It does not take much for the bad guys to glean some really useful intel from just a few tid bits of info. Just talk to some of the intel guys. If they share what our intel guys shared with me when I was in 1/17th it will certainly change your outlook.
