The National Infantry Museum on Baltzell Avenue at Fort Benning, Ga., will permanently close its doors to the public on Feb. 15 to make way for the new infantry museum that is being built from the ground up. http://www.armytimes.com/news/2008/01/army_infantrymuseum_080128w/

They are building a new Infantry museum,as you all know. Alot of Fort Benning is being rebuilt, in about 2 years no one would recoginze this place.

agonyea (1/29/2008) They are building a new Infantry museum,as you all know. Alot of Fort Benning is being rebuilt, in about 2 years no one would recoginze this place. When I went through in 2005 I hardly recognized the place! Harmony Church is completely gone except for the old Ranger School barracks (they are now the CONUS Replacement Center), Kelly Hill has been completely rebuilt as far as I can tell, and there's a bunch of new stuff over by the Airborne School, including the Ranger Regiment buildings. Sand Hill looks the same as it did in 1980 I suppose. Funny to think that the barracks I thought of as "new" in 1980 are now almost as old as the WWII barracks at Harmony Church were when I went through. *Man* that makes me feel old!

| Martin, when I went through Benning in late 1976 the Ranger Department was in WWII barracks across from the rapelling tower. Those are also gone. The LRSLC and Sniper School buildings are in the area where my AIT battalion was located, which was about 50 meters or so from where the Ranger Department was at that time. I saw the construction of the new Museum when I was there in September. From what I understand the WWII company street is already open and they are having events there, weddings, receptions, etc. The company street has Patton's old headquarters, a chapel, some barracks and some other period buildings.

| I took my son down to Benning last April to show him where I went to basic and Jump School. We stayed at the same LaQuinta in Columbus we tried to drink ourselves to death on weekends. That was funny My basic training unit, Bco 2-2, was right off the main highway that runs thru post and the water tower. We used to practice D&C up there. Now it is nothing but tall pines. I couldn't believe it. then the next AM we went out to Fryer and watched the next graduating class jump. He loved it. But yeah, big changes since I went thru in Summer of 87.

509Trooper (1/29/2008) Martin, when I went through Benning in late 1976 the Ranger Department was in WWII barracks across from the rapelling tower. Those are also gone. The LRSLC and Sniper School buildings are in the area where my AIT battalion was located, which was about 50 meters or so from where the Ranger Department was at that time. When I was there it was the NCO academy, I believe (if it's the same are I'm thinking of.) In 1997 it was the CRC and the Sniper School was also in that same area. When I went through in 2005 it was all gone. Surprised me, because they had upgraded many of the barracks to include individual rooms and AC. Not only did they tear down the buildings, they even bulldozed up the pavement so there was nothing left.

Don't worry guys. Cactus DZ is still covered with the prickly stuff. The bush is still just as dense is it was back then. Fryar hasn't changed in either length or width. All the rest is for the sissys.
