Hello,

Today's sermon hit a note with me and I figured it would be an intesting thing to share, luckily our church records each weeks sermon and makes them available. I picked up the cd on the way out and uploaded it for you since the website takes a few more days.

It is about 40mb MP3 file running about 35 min but if you have the time and the interest, Id like to see what others think. Our pastor is discussing the Jesus you seldom hear about, the one who curses a fig tree and tears up market (as he says in his sermon 'the Jesus that if your kids heard about this in sunday school might think was a bit scary')

With our group here and the background of reconciling military with religion and the violence that it inevitably requires I thought a discussion on a less pacifist Jesus might be worth a discussion.

I just listened to it once while working and need to listen to it again and focus on what he says about chasing out the money-changers from the temple. I am familiar with both that story and the fig tree, but I need to listen again to try and capture what he is actually saying. You will hear from me again, but at the moment I am headed for a Bible study I am leading at a chapel.

What struck a note with you about it?

I think the concentration on a Jesus that is unlike most of the sermons you generally hear. I believe that it may be good for veterans and active military who have been called to do some hard things to hear that even Jesus wasnt always the peace-nik.

That's where I thought you were going and you have a serious point. The Jesus of much of American Christianity is all about LOVE while the fact that He is also the Righteous Judge of all mankind who will one day return to exercise God's Holy wrath against ALL sin. On a different note, there are the issues around being a soldier in light of the commandment not to kill (that actually refers to murder). Are you referring to both sorts of the 'gentler Jesus" syndrome?

This is going to get interesting - I hope many are reading and will comment.

Im actually just facinated with the discussion from the point of view where Jesus feels more like a regular guy and in my mind much more approachable (in a sense). I think we can better relate to a Jesus that at times can lose his temper and even 'buck the system'. The discussions at church have been taking a look at how Jesus really did throw a wrench in the system and didnt just dabble in messing with the Jewish laws of the day but rather he really went out of his way to send the message.

I think that it resonates with me because I feel like I could hang around a Jesus who knows when its time to 'not be nice' vs that uncomfortable feeling you might get of not fitting in if you were hanging around a Jesus who was Mr Peace and Love all the time.

It's a good discussion, but I'm not aure Jesus actually 'felt like a regular guy'. Even in his youth, he realized he was sent rom God with a special mission. He did however, spend a lot of time 'tossing the wrench'. He totally destroyed the religious system of the day, which was based on works. He told folks the only 'work' they need do is to believe the one the Father sent. Some did and some didn't. He told some of those who didn't that they were UNABLE to even hear what he had to say and that the Father must draw/enable people to come to Christ. Also, he said things like "all that the Father has given me WILL come." He called religious leaders 'white-washed graves' and that their father was Satan. He wasn't big into 'church growth' when he said hard things that caused people following so they could see miracles or get fed to quit following. He knew what they do so you could call if a 'church reduction' plan designed to weed out folks following for the wrong reasons.

Is that what you were getting to?

Sure, my point wasnt to make it sound like Jesus was going to throw a beer back with me but that the whole thing made me feel like Jesus would be more approachable.
