I got word at my 82nd meeting yesterday that one of our members who managed to get back in is now a captain and chaplain with the 325 so I can go visit the falcon nest while we're in town.

Mortarman, I'm always looking for ways to get more cool points so I'm going to send my request on up the chain to HH6. My 7 y/o and I are in Indian Princesses together (YMCA), and I think this activity would even qualify for a patch or two!

Do you guys have any idea how many folks might be flying in to RDU for this event. I do volunteer work (unpaid of course) with the USO at RDU and I'm wondering if there's anything we could do to help people coming in for the week.

There is a USO in one terminal at the airport, but not the other one (yet - we will have a much larger one in that terminal in the next couple of years). The main issue with the USO is we just cannot support all veterans. Because of size and budgetary issues, USO's only allow Active Duty (including activated NG and Reserve component) or Retired Military personnel and their families. And since a lot of us didn't stay in for 20+, a lot of troopers coming in aren't be eligible to use the USO.

If there were groups coming in at specific times, maybe I could meet them and help them figure out where they needed to go. I'm just brainstorming here because it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to attend much (if any) of AAW, but I'd like to help out any way I can.

Ive found that if you poke your head into the USO and you just want to borrow a comfy chair and a donut they'll ignore the fact that you're not a retiree or activated trooper. Never heard of any veteran being kicked out but I'll definately give up a chair if the place if filling and there are those who qualifiy to be in there.

Unfortunately it does happen though.

The volunteers who staff the place are instructed to accept only ID's from Active Duty or Retired and their dependants, but I would hope that in certain circumstances the volunteers staffing the desk would let the individual in, but it really would be a dangerous precedent to let anyone in who showed up at the door.

I completely agree and have only used the USO one time when we were leaving all american week and an old roommate of mine was dropping off food at the USO to give away to the troops passing through, we had about an hour to kill before the flight so we hung out, talked to the volunteers and relaxed a bit.

In my opinion, you dont go to the USO just because you're passing through, but if I got stuck in an airport due to flight cancellation or weather, you can bet your fourth point I'll be nosing around the USO to see if I can pull a favor or two.
