OK, these are pictures of a memorial stone outside of JFK Memorial Chapel at Ft. Bragg. The problem is none of us, at least from the guys I work with, can figure out what it is remembering. We've not contacted the USASOC historian yet but I thought I'd throw it out here for your expertise

I do not concern myself about that, but to be always ready, no matter when it may overtake me." He added, after a pause, looking me full in the face: "That is the way all men should live, and then all would be equally brave" General "Stonewall" Jackson

There was a demining operation in Afghanistan at that time that the 5th SFG was involved with called Operation Salam but I have not yet found anything with the March 12, 1989 date yet.

| My guess would be a plane crash of some sort. Did you Google it? UPDATE: I think I Found it: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=950DE3DF103DF930A25750C0A96F948260 New York Times, dated 03/13/1989 LEAD: An Air Force Reserve helicopter crashed and burned today during a night training mission, killing 12 people aboard and leaving three missing, officials said. An Air Force Reserve helicopter crashed and burned today during a night training mission, killing 12 people aboard and leaving three missing, officials said. The helicopter, a CH-3, was flying with another helicopter from Davis-Monthan Air Force to the Air Force's Gila Bend Gunnery Range when it went down about 7:45 P.M., according to a base spokesman, Capt. Mark Besich. Both are assigned to the 71st Special Operations Squadron at Davis-Monthan, he said. The crashed occurred in an uninhabited area 20 miles north of Tucson. Twelve people were pronounced dead at the crash site and three others were unaccounted for and presumed dead, Pima County Sheriff Sgt. Tom Taylor said. A sheriff's office dispatcher said the second helicopter continued flying to Ryan Field, a small airport about 25 miles west of Tucson. Captain Besich said the CH-3 helicopter usually carries a crew of four and has a capacity of 22 passengers.
