CHARLESTON, S.C. — Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson called for a million-member military ground force and more funding to equip and care for service members and veterans in a speech Tuesday at a military college in this early presidential primary state.

A million men!!?? Why not just leave it all to a small squad of highly motivated paratroopers; unlimited ammo, food, water, and liberal (no pun intended) rules of engagement... over in no time I tell ya.

Just a note, what Thompson is asking for is essentially the same force we had prior to the Berlin Wall going down.  I question whether or not we can sustain that size of a force today without a draft.  Also, as we have noted before, all of those extra troops are not going to do us a whole lot of good without the air and sealift to move them to trouble spots.

While I would like to see this, I want to see how the Army is able to handle the OPTEMPO when they get the additional troops that have already been approved.  Of course by the time the new units are in place I expect the OPTEMPO for Iraq to be considerably smaller, regardless of the situation there.

The draft would have to be tightly monitored. Too many too soon would be a disaster. It would take a long time to get a competent, will trained, well equipped, million-man ground force, with the facilities we have today.

The problem is not just recruiting, but also getting enough NCOs and officers trained to lead them.  Also, it is highly unlikely that the Country could afford the current pay levels, much less any bonuses, for that size of force.  This would impact even more on recruiting and retention.

Wonder how many extra bodies could be found by simply reducing the Pentagon's staff by two thirds and assigning those folks to real units...
