His mother emailed me last night asking for a replacement 82nd flag so I ran to army/navy place and picked one up and dropped it off at the house (nobody home). At the same time I left a gold star banner for them.

Brother Falcon,

thank you for your service, many times over, when others would not serve. Thank you for guarding our freedom and fighting the terrorists in their back yard instead of our back yard. You showed more honor and courage in your time in the 82nd Airborne than those that you protect could ever know in many, many lifetimes.

You will be missed, but always honored.

"Let's Go"

Tex out,

" The dignity of man is not shattered in a single blow, but slowly softened and bent and eventually neutered. Men are seldom forced to act, but are constantly restrained from acting. Such power does not destroy outright, but it dampens, weakens and ultimately suffocates until the entire population is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid uninspired animals of which the government is the shepherd. Rest in Peace Brother

I'm Surprised Panama's still sea level, after all the Push Ups I did down there.

Quite a crowd yesterday at the wake and it was good to see that there was plenty of servicemen and women out there to honor him. Patriot Guard stood a flag line all day at the wake and did an outstanding job today at the funeral.

The westboro freaks were picketting down the street for about 45 min with the usual garbage signs but added holding the flag upside down and dragging them on the ground to the mix. Nice group, couldnt find anyone to drive over the curb unfortunately. The patriot guard riders blocked the view and I am fairly sure the family never even knew these people were there.

The church was full and the services were fitting of a paratrooper. His older sister Anne spoke about him and many of the quotes she mentioned were from fellow paratroopers he served with.

We walked to the small Elmhurst College cemetary where full military honors were observed by members of the 325 AIR who performed as fitting Americas Guard of Honor.

Sgt Joseph Vanek is home and at rest, may his family find the peace they deserve knowing he served his country with honor and distinction.

Here is an image I took quickly with my phone while the honor guard was folding the flag.

One note about another reason I am glad this site exists. Last night I met one of our partial lurkers linedog82. He drove nearly 2 hours both last night and today for the services. He was a member of 2-325 and proudly wore his own beret at the cemetary to show his support for another falcon.

Airborne! Great meeting you linedog and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the service.

I was honored to be able to attend the sevices for my brother falcon. Although I've often heard of the Patriot Guard riders I've never seen them before and I have to say I came away impressed by them. I'd almost get a bike and ride with them if my tragic "un-coolness" wouldn't detract from their honorable work . At the risk of being presumptious, I'd like to encourage all of you to attend services such as Sgt. Vanek's should the unfortunate opportunity arise. It'll remind you of what's really important in this world: courage, honor, commitment and the bonds which are formed by falling out of perfectly good aircraft. Sgt. Vanek's family thanked me for coming and for my service, which left me for a loss of words. I hope that I'd have the same strength and dignity under similar circumstances.

Finally, I'd like to say I enjoyed meeting Rigger. He had some interesting stories about some of you- which leads me to conclude that you can the paratrooper out of the uniform but not the paratrooper out of the person. Rigger was a credit to all of us in this matter and we're fortunate to have him as our representive.
