| I will post the PAO notice as soon as it comes but since this one is a bit more personal, I'll post early. I just recieved news that Sgt Vanek died on Sunday after taking small arms fire in Baghdad. He was 22 and was on his third tour and a few months ago had contacted me via email since he was from Elmhurst, IL (suburb of Chicago) and was interested in getting some care packages from us. He told me that some troops from Florida got Orlando shirts (likely from the last national convention) and he wanted to show off his Chicago connection. Sadly we dont have any shirts but we started collecting things up for care packages. On another occation I spoke with his mother via phone and got more detail on Sgt Vanek including a picture of him with his group with Gen Patraeus (he's the one with the clear glasses next to the man himself) I just spoke with the family and services havent been set yet but I will be leading a group of chapter members in attending to honor him. His father said that he was very proud of being a member of the 82nd Airborne Division and I told him that we are proud of him as well. Here is a short local notice with video http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-vanek13nov13,1,723165.story November 13, 2007 Release #11-001 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 82nd Airborne Division Paratrooper dies in Iraq FORT BRAGG, N.C. — An 82nd Airborne Division Paratrooper died of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire in Baghdad, Iraq Monday. Sgt. Joseph M. Vanek, 22, of Elmhurst, Ill., was an Infantryman with 2nd Bn., 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment (AIR), 2nd Brigade Combat Team (BCT), 82nd Abn. Div. “Sgt. | RIP Trooper. We will not forget you!

RIP, Trooper.
Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American GI. One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.
