There are a couple of guys I've been sending packages to regularly, mostly with the usual snacks, DVD movies, etc. Also some not-so-usual requests, like footballs, M9 magazines, Wolff gun springs, and the local paper after the Red Sox won the World Series.

But the latest request is cheese [no jokes, it's what he wants] and crackers. I thought that something kind of hard like Cheddar or Jarlsburg, wrapped in plastic, would survive the trip. But my wife and some others say that it has to be refrigerated or it won't survive.

I've canvassed my friends, and there is not a cheese shipping expert among them. Suggestions?

I tend to steer towards the prepackaged cheese and crackers in the snack aisles.  They now come in a wide range of flavors to choose from.  You might want to start there.  Even though it is starting to cool down in Iraq and Afghanistan, I think that sending cheese that needs to be refrigerated would be a tad rough.

Hard cheeses with wax rinds should be fine...

I agree.

Also, don't attempt soft cheese.

You can check with your local grocier (not the kid stocking the shelves, but someone who knows the business).

All the way, sir!!!

Canned cheese. They claim it's good:

we now have real Kraft® Cheddar Cheese. In a can. Its technical name is "Pasteurized Processed Cheddar Cheese Product." (Please see note toward the bottom of this page.)  It's that name you have to give it because it wasn't "naturally" produced by a Wisconsin cheesemaster. It's a legal thing. From the ingredients and from the TASTE, you'll believe it's honest-to-God real, Wisconsin-made cheese! It's just plain delicious.

I have sent Velveeta along with pasta to some of the troops per their request.  Sometimes they get tired of the boxed mac and cheese.  I would try Steve's suggestion about the waxed cheese for them as well.

Everyone says I can ship hard cheese, but no one agrees on whether or not Cheddar is "hard."

I'm going to email Cabot and ask them.

Hard cheese needs a knife to slice it.

Soft cheese can be spread with a butter knife.

Chedder is available in both forms.

All the way, sir!!!
