Sorry to disappoint all, but your memories are week.

Airborne school has had the standard of an 8 minute mile for more than 30 years now. The Blackhats that lead the run are on the clock and are required to cut each mile plus or minus 15 seconds and the total run distance what ever it is within plus or minus 15 minutes.

There have been changes over the years, like dropping the chin up requirement. But the run has remained a constent.

maybe my memory is weak, but if the 8 min mile has always been in force for the last 30 years, why the separation of male and females for the run when I was there?  An 8 min mile is too easy for a male, yet not too fast for a female.  They could all run together for PT.  I think the blackhats might have broken the rules.....or maybe I should shake cobwebs out of my brain!  Thanks for the info, though.

Thanks for the correction, Arcticabn

The only person I remember losing for not making the runs was an SFAS grad., though his motives were questionable.

Well here we go. ArcticAbn was wrong, AGAIN!

The physical standards at the Basic Airborne Course have been laxed up to "9" minute miles.

The standards for physical fitness can be found at the following link.

https://www.benning.army.mil/airborne/airborne/pt.htm

Damn what's this world coming to when the Airborne Shuffle isn't 8 minutes any more?

According to my Blackhats in 1977 the official standard was nine minute per mile on the run.  For females it was half of a minute per mile slower(that's 9:30 for all of eleven chucks ).  However, as one of the senior Blackhats said, that's just too damn slow.  So the actual pace was eight minutes per mile, half of a minute slower for females(that's 8:30 per mile for you maggots).  Of course, I do remember one morning during Tower Week when we did the first lap at a seven minute mile pace, but then we slowed down to normal.

Drnurse, my former squad leader was a Blackhat for Ground Week in the early eighties.  He told me one time that around 1982 they did combine the formations but that they had slowed everyone down to 8:30 per mile.

Wrench, welcome to the site.  Thank you for your service to our Country and your willingness to stay in.  If you want to be a Paratrooper then I say stay in and go for it.  The better shape you are in physically before you get there the better off you will be during the course.  Check out some of the topics on Airborne in the Recruiting Forum.

I can accept the whole 8 minute mile thing. That wasn't the hard part really. It just took some of your steam away. Now I don't know if it was just 44th Co and the evil 1SG Manning the Musclehead who insisted that we were doing PT all frikken' day or if it was just BAC in the '70's, but the Blackhats smoked us constantly during the training day.

Basic was for sissy's when it came to PT.

Infantry AIT was OK.

But after BAC I wasn't really having a hard time at 2nd Batt. Between being smoked and hitting the gym you could get pretty studly.

I guess BAC is preparing for some kind of "baby boomer" surge now with 9 minute miles.

I'm so glad I was in back in the good old days.

I really appreciate it .So it basically sounds like if you can pass the pt test than the running isnt bad. But is it an actuall run or airborne shuffle?
