But starting Sunday, he and everyone else in Tennessee will be required to show identification before buying beer in state stores — no matter how old the buyer appears.

"It's the stupidest law I ever heard of," Wilson said. "You can see I'm over 21." (Comment of 66 year old man with white long beard.)

Tennessee is the first U.S. state to make universal carding mandatory, says the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association. However, the law does not apply to beer sales in bars and restaurants, and it does not cover wine and liquor.

It may not be law here in Minnesota (The Nanny State), but the "We Card Everyone" slogan is in the window of everyone of the liquor stores here. In my local town. If you go to the city run store, you must provide them a state drivers license (not military ID) which they will scan into their system. I know several people that refuse to buy there just because of that.

It's called conditioning.  Pretty soon we'll all get used to everyone knowing what we buy, what we drink, what we watch on TV, what we read, where we go, how long we stay there....it all sounds so Orwellean, but then when they stick that little brand on us, or that little chip on us the majority won't go kicking and screaming.

We'll all just be the little "beastie boys" or we won't be able to buy or sell or eat or drink or work or move about or we simply will be moved into those little internment camps and extinguished.  It's a coming.  It's for our own good you know, can't have free thinkers in a free society, we must know the actions of everyone to protect the innocent, oh, except of course the actions of those who control the innocent.  Can't have the wolves monitored.

Its called fear of frivolous lawsuits in a "sue happy" country. I dont mind producing ID for a quick visual inspection (not big on the scan idea if they're KEEPING data) but I think this is less about protecting our youth and more about protecting thier ass.

Most of this could go away if there were a few changes in American society like parents actually taking a little resposibility and employing some discipline (and the public backing the hell off parents who are instituting such discipline) and then we setup our lawsuit procedures like those of Austrailia... if you lose your lawsuit you can be liable for the other parties legal fees. I believe this would make John and Joe average less apt to listen to the local ambulance chaser if the case wasnt pretty solid to start with. We have enough crap in our courts slowing things down without petty bs grinding things to a halt.

Not to hijack the thread, but with 12 years working for litigation attorneys I do have a view on this(I know you're shocked ).  I have seen people get money out of lawsuits that were in fact frivolous.  I have also seen people that had bona fide claims get nothing or next to it.  The problem is how do you punish those that deserve it without punishing those that had a legitimate claim, or even people with a marginal case who won't be able to find an attorney to handle a case because they are worried about having to pay the fees afterward.

Two things to remember: first, very few cases are have one side or the other with clean hands.  If it goes to trial you can almost guarantee that both sides have some problem with their position otherwise it would settle.  Second, just because you lost a case doesn't mean you didn't have a case to start with.  It may have been close with the jury and they came down on one side or the other.

The fact is that most states, and I think the Federal government, do have a provision where attorneys fees can be awarded against the losing party and/or their lawyer who brought the suit in the first place.  The real problem is that judges seldom assess fees against someone who brought a truly frivolous suit, and almost never against the attorneys who handled the case even though they had all of the facts.  Also, too often insurance companies go with the path of least resistance and pay rather than fight the good fight where they have a good case.

Can anyone figure out why I don't work for lawyers anymore?

Cause it is too hard to was the feeling of dirty off of you?

as far as the scanning of the license that has become a norm in a lot of states now. It makes the underpaid under educated non caring cashier smarter now. They scan the license and the computer tells them if the person is not old enough to purchase the product they have. I just recently worked case where the super smart cashier decided that the computer was wrong because she knew the person was old enough the computer just read it wrong so she sold them the beer. When I walked back into the store and issued her the citation she was shocked. I am so waiting for that one to go to court.
