The 508th Association is holding their Reunion in Birmingham this year.  They asked our 82nd Chapter to provide a Color Guard for their opening breakfast, which we did this morning.  After the opening ceremony we had breakfast with them.  Following that we traveled to the Shelby County Airport south of Birmingham to meet up with members of the Airborne Demonstration Team who were performing a jump from a C-47.  Following that we went down the road to a local attraction, the American Village.  This is a small collection of Colonial style buildings, including a recreation of Mount Vernon.  The ADT jumped in the field by the village and then we had lunch, where role players did Patrick Henry and Teddy Roosevelt.  There were 19 WWII vets at the event.

The 508th Association was started strictly for those who served in the Regiment until the war was over.  Those who served in the Regiment after the war, even those who came in after September of 1945, are not eligible.  This makes their Association a dead man's Association.

So, did anybody else have a good day?

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American GI.  One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

Barry, are you just saying that the 508th PIR is a "Dead Man's Assoc" because you are in the 509th Accoc Bro trying to take a dig at the 508th?  I served with both the most of my time was with C 1/508th down in Panama 88-89' during my 2 years down there; so yeah even though the Gingerbreadman is tattooed on my arm from my time in the 509th I am a Proud member of 508th as well.

I'm Surprised Panama's still sea level, after all the Push Ups I did down there.

Yep....got a message from someone very special today!
*************************************************************
Hey Steven, This is the greatest surprise to be able to hear
from you and to contact you. I left a message on the 101st
web page but this is even better because I can contact you right away.
I have always been so sorry that we lost contact with your Mother, Connie and you.
We lost contact but we never forgot any of you.
We were living next door to your Mother and Daddy when Connie and you were both born.
We were Dick, Mary Agnes, Glenn Jr., Tom and Jeff. Jeff is just a few months older than Connie.
When we left Ft. Campbell the first time, Dick went to Korea. Your family went to Panama just
about the same time. Then we all returned to Ft. Campbell again and were just as close friends
as we had been the first time. We were sent to Germany and while we were there,
Dick was sent to Vietnam for his first tour there. He started out in the airborne infantry just
as your Daddy did but he (Dick) went to CID school and was no longer in the infantry when he went
to Vietnam. After returning from Vietnam, we were sent to Huntsville, AL and from there to
Ft. McClellan, AL. We were in Ft. McClellan for three years and he was then sent back to Vietnam
for another tour. After returning from Vietnam a second time, he served three more years at
Ft. McClellan and retired.
All in all, we have been in this area (Jacksonville, AL.) since 1968. We were in touch with your
Mother through the time that we retired. We would love to hear from your Mother and Connie too if
this is possible. You were absolutely right about us being from Memphis, TN although I do not know
how you could remember, you were such a little boy. We visited the Vietnam memorial when it was
in our area and traced your Daddy's name from it. This is a memorial that is very special to us and
that we will always keep. Glenn sent me his picture that you sent to him. I have printed it, it is a
wonderful picture. He was the ultimate soldier, totally dedicated to the Army and to his men.
We just really hope that you and Connie are having a wonderful life and that your Mother's health is
not bad. We hope that you will remember that we love all of you. As you know, Glenn is in Orlando area,
has been at Disney for over twenty years, Tom lives in Birmingham and is a high school history and economics
teacher, Jeff lives in Birmingham and is a salesman for a safety equipment company. We have 8 grandchildren,
Dick and I are fine, both in our late seventies but still enjoying everyday that God gives us.
It has been wonderful to "talk" to you and we hope we will hear from you.
Please remember us to Connie and to your Mother, we are sending our love to all of you,
Mary

We did a jump one time for some WW2 508 vets (on Sicily DZ). They went right out to the middle of the DZ to meet us as we landed. A couple of them came right up to me as I was rolling up my chute, wanting to check out my M203 and whatnot

A 'Dead Man's Assoc' is one in which new members that don't meet a specific criteria are not accepted into the association (in this case, only WW2 508 vets can be part of the association). So as members die out, there are no new members coming into the organization. I think the COHORT chapter of the 82nd Assoc. is considered a 'dead man's' orginazation as well

Or dead drunks..............

Al, how many of your jumps in the 505th were done with hangovers; I only got 11 jumps during my 17 months with C 1/508th and I did a few of them "under the weather."  That Opening Shock sure was pretty good cure for the hangover; cause I never puked on any of the birds even when guys were puking down there.

I'm Surprised Panama's still sea level, after all the Push Ups I did down there.
