My friend's son is enlisting. He wanted MP but they told him that requires a minimum 5 YEAR enlistment.??????

Is that BS?

He then told them he'd settle for Armor so they put frikken "11X Combat Infantry" on his contract and told him he could "change it to something else later".

He absolutely does not want to be a "foot soldier". He does want to do his duty and serve in the sandbox.

Since I don't believe I'm allowed to disembowel the recruiter I figured I post here instead. He really wants MP.

I think your friend's son needs to find a different recruiter.

Not necessarily.  I understand there is a retention problem with MP's, that and because one of the primary combat duties is route recon/convoy security they are hungry for more and more MP's.  That's why so many suport units are being called upon to perform these functions.  I've also read where the Army is trying to convert certain reserve units like artillery into MP units.

In truth, the Army is moving more and more of the MP's road work over to lazy asses like me as DA civilian Police.  This is freeing up more of them for deployments.  He may not be humping a ruck, but he will find himself at teh point of the spear as an MP.

I can do some checking for ya if you'd like.  But for police work, he may be better off in the (UGH!) Air Force.......

All true, but think about it:  If the Army needed more MPs, why would they put greater restrictions on getting into the MOS?  If anything, they should be making it easier to get into the MPs, right?  That's what makes me think the recruiter is FOS and is just trying to fill a quota for 11-series enlistments, if they have such a thing - I don't know.  Maybe Michelle or someone else who has experience in the recruiting command can fill us in on how it works with enlistments by MOS.

It could also be that the recruiter is just lazy and doesn't want to have to do all the background check/security clearance stuff you have to do to get someone into the MPs.  Back in the old days you had to be PRP (Personnel Reliability Program) certified to get into the MOS, as well as have at least an interim Secret clearance.  So it may be that by getting the guy into the infantry, he gets his point for a recruit and figures the guy can just reclass once he finishes AIT or something, at which point he (and not the recruiter) has to do all the security clearance paperwork.

Well, we had a little talk regarding this whole enlistment situation.

I also need some input on the MI field in general and language specialist in particular. It sounds like the recruiter involved is a shameful soul indeed.

Apparently nothing but combat arms is available without major strings attached in today's Army. I just don't believe it. The young man has a GT of 115 and is just fine in the PT department. His dad is a good friend of mine and I want to make sure he gets the truth before making this big decision.

Each recruiting station has a company HQ, and Bn Command. Request that you talk to the Recruiters Plt SGT or 1SGT. Have them verify info, this not a problem and they will be able to put this info that you have requested in writing.

The thing about going in 11x and reclassing afterward is BS.  If he goes in 11x he will go to basic at Benning and they are not going to reclass and send him to Knox for AIT at that point.
