It is definitely not like it used to be, the Army has increased its punishment for all offenses across the board, you can read the post newspapers and see what is happening. They are definitely cracking down, it is no longer the free ride to put processing it used to be.
When did that change? Still catch and release around here.

I knew this jackass that was in the Navy and when they went on a "port of call" in Australia he decided "Aaah, Fuck it, I like ti here, I'm staying..." almost 5 years later when he decided he wanted to go back to the US he called the US Navy and turned himself in for a "Free ride home"

They kept him for a while and processed him out as a section 8...

He definitely IS nuts...

My dad, Pappy 6 stated that back in the day....the 50's...... a young Joe that went AWOL soon had his squad leader and Platoon Sergeant showing up at his mammas and daddies house hunting for said Joe. He also said that on more than one occassion they showed back up being escorted by the local police department with a few visible lumps on them. Seems the local 5-0 did not appreciate a Joe deserting his unit either!

The goverment ought to post an bounty on any deserter. Even a low one. Say $500.00. Build a Deserters website, and let the John Q. Public hunt them down. The rules??? Scoop him up and turn him into the nearest LE department. If he wants to resist. Oh well. John Q. would be immune from any prosecution.

At one point in time, we did get $$ for returning a deserter. Don't know if it is still true.

not all of them get OTH discharges and are out the next week. We had a soldier just show back up that deserted from B/3-502 3 weeks before they deployed for OIF I. Our company being the only infantry company in 1-75 RSTA (What 3-502 became) they gave him to us to deal with. He is getting charged with desertion and will probably do some jail time. He was picked up on a traffic stop.

Come out here to the real world shipwreck. Nobody goes looking for AWOL/Deserters anymore, that is why the majority get picked up on traffic stops. Fort MacPherson had a USMC Awol App squad that would hunt the dirtbags down. back in the day, we would get $50 for an AWOL, $100 for a deserter.

But it is frustrating to pick one up on a traffic stop to see him back on the block in a week or two with an OTH discharge.

Contraire cast away, I was referring to circle filing dannytechwannabe's AWOL on a ship idea.  When I served onboard the Eisenhower, I did 6 months TAD to Master At Arms and caught one yahoo who thought he could hide away in a friggin fan room the entire cruise while his bud's brought him Chief's mess grub.

All three got brigg time, forfiture of pay, and a OTH boot out the hatch!
