There's an article in the Army Times that discusses how the Army doesn't use resources to track down deserters. But it also mentions that the percentage of deserters in the USMC and Navy are much lower.

I'm gonna be Captain Obvious on this one: isn't it hard to desert/go AWOL when you're on a damn ship? Where do you go? Is it better to hide in the engine room for 6 months and just wait until you get to port?

I lack people-skills.

You could desert at your next port of call.....but if that is say Dubai, then your hosed.

Marines are to stubborn or thickheaded, and who would want to give up the rock and roll lifestyle of the Chair Force?????

Actually, the USMC has fulltime AWOL apprehension teams beating the bushes for wayward marines and sailors. The Army waites until they are declared deserters and file an arrest warrant, then expects the civilian authorities to go find these guys for them.

Vast majority get snagged during routine traffic stops rightch'ere in the good ole US of A according to reports by the Navy.

Come out here to the real world shipwreck. Nobody goes looking for AWOL/Deserters anymore, that is why the majority get picked up on traffic stops. Fort MacPherson had a USMC Awol App squad that would hunt the dirtbags down. back in the day, we would get $50 for an AWOL, $100 for a deserter.

But it is frustrating to pick one up on a traffic stop to see him back on the block in a week or two with an OTH discharge.

I believe the Army has a higher rate of individuals getting killed in Iraq than the Navy. This would tend to mean that less Navy are likely to feel so unnerved by direct conflict that they'd consider dessertion.

While Id love to have the Army track down and slam AWOL jerks, I dont beleive they have dedicated resources to put to it. Even when they DO catch these guys they're just pushing them out of the service with a dishonorable. IF you're going to do anything about it... START by leveraging the full weight of the LAW against the ones you catch. Serious punishment under the letter of the law should discourage others.

At this point the decision is that you can bail and the only punishment is a little confinement during your chapter out processing and living with a dishonorable. Not much of a deterrant if you ask me.

The Navy has less deserters than the Army. What genius came up with that bright revelation.

I love how this article starts, "There is no crack team of bounty hunters, no elite military unit whose job is to track them down and bring them in. " http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,,-6743473,00.html

Now I am not sure which would be easier,
