Back in 1990, when I was with 3/5th SFG and we were going to Zaire, we were briefed on the HIV rate in their Army - Un-fuckin-BELIEVABLE!!!

Death, disease and decay...  Let 'em have it, I say...

Just what we need more people tied up in headquarters. If Rumsfeld was truely a reformer he would have cut the number of unified commands not expand the number.Africa has been under EUCOM for decades so why change now ?

You all don't get it.

Since you were in, AQ, GPSC and others have made significant inroads into Africa. The PRC is all over the place. Africa is starting to realize it has huge natural resources but lots of ungoverned space where bad guys can train/equip.

EUCOM can't handle all the issues it has outside Africa (Europe, Russia, Israel, Afghanistan (as part of NATO/ISAF).

Bottom line -- AFRICOM is overdue.

Having been to Angola and Rhodesia then seeing Somalia and Sudan on TV..........me thinks Africa will be a nightmare.

Wouldnt it be cheaper to offer "incentives" to countries that inform on the bad guys. Offer assistance, trade etc in return for good intel that proves true. We can then spend our time and energy in demonstrating new weapon systems.

It does appear to make sense (though, I do chaff abit at the thought of annointing another four-star "perfumed prince" to borrow that term).

I have just read where GPSC changed their name to AQ, and are working with Bin Laden. It seems the intel was way ahead of the press as I first heard about AFRICOM just the other day, but the press releases were out there months ago. Whether we like it or not, the war on terror will go to the places we least want to be, but maybe we can make progress in parts of Africa and we won't have a bunch of Iraqs to deal with in 30 years.
