The Camp Toccoa Reunion will be October 5-7, 2007.  Saturday morning, October 6, the Currahee run takes place up(and down) the mountain.  At the airfield there will be a jump by the Airborne Demonstration Team and RIs from the 5th Ranger Battalion.  The 5th will also have a hand-to-hand/combatives and a pugil stick demo.  There will be static displays of weapons and vehicles, also reenactors will do a reenactment of a battle and will have their own weapons and equipment display.  They invite all Airborne vets, but particularly invite WWII vets of the 506th, 501st, 511th and 517th PIRs to come back.  I plan on trying to go to this year.  Anybody else?

Well, another Toccoa reunion is over.  I swung down through Ft. Benning Friday evening and picked up RangerRios and headed up to Jmpmastr's AO.  Rey and I enjoyed Dale's hospitality in his Airborne bar Friday night and headed up to Toccoa Saturday morning.  We arrived during the ceremonies outside of the Museum a little after noon.

There were several WWII vets of the 101st(mainly 506th PIR, although there was at least one 502nd PIR vet) in attendance.  Rios and I walked around and looked at the reenactor areas while Dale did some NG recruiting among a couple of vets he met.  We also watched the SF Parachute Demo team make a jump at the NG armory in town.

Then we headed over to Currahee and it was a trip up the mountain.  We drove all the way to the top and took a look around and enjoyed the view.  At the bottom we headed over to the Airborne Memorial where we met an 82nd vet from the late fifties with his grandsons.

Afterward we headed out to the airfield where they were supposed to be having a reenactment, but finding none we headed back to the Museum.  There we went through the Museum at the old railroad depot.  They have a pretty good display of WWII memorabilia and one of the stables used as a barracks for the 506th PIR.  At the end we discovered the Donald Burgette was there autographing books.  Rey bought the three books of his that the Museum had in stock and had him autograph them(I didn't know he was going to be there and left my hard back books at home).  After that and a little hands on with a couple of the reenactor weapons, we headed back to Dale's place.

We then enjoyed Dale's beer and big screen before heading off to bed.  Sunday we hit the brunch with Dale and family and then it was back down to Benning to drop off Rey and home.  Too bad you guys couldn't make the fun.
