Just my knee jerk reaction but whats the odds that a few of the big names will be aiming for retirement before the September meeting with Congress happens to decide if the surge was good bad or ugly?

He's a guy who rose to rank under the Clinton era and personally a general who should have never been there to begin with. Think Shaleskivilly or Sheinseki in a Jarheads uniform.

I read where Carl Levin had called for both him and Steven Hadley, National Security Advisor, to retire during hearings to confirm LTG Lute, the war "czar". This is big news because while his term is up at the end of September, normally the Chairman is appointed for a second term.

| Here's the intel (from within the 5 sided brothel): GEN Pace was supposed to have been nominated for another 2 year term as CJCS. SecDef consulted (properly) with Senate Armed Services Committee (D and R) members who told him that, due to the fact that Pace was in leadership from August 2001 to the present, he would get a tough grilling on (of course) Iraq. SecDef and the WH decided that, because they either lacked the political capital or didn't want to use what little they have left, they would not force his nomination. Whether or not GEN Pace deserved to be renominated, this is a bad sign. If the White House lacks the will or ability to get him confirmed, they truly lack the ability to get anything of signifcance through the Congress the remainder of the Administration. The bad guys are laughing.

Gates has announced that he is nominating Adm. Mike Mullen to be Chairman of the JCS. Mullen is currently serving as CNO.
