I have a fellow working for me who inquired recently about retruning to military service.  I told him to contact the recruiting office in Atlanta and he told me he got the run around. So I am postin this here.  He was told he was over educated and too old.

Here's his deal.  He was enlisted, airborne qualified served infantry.  He is 44 years old and served five years active duty.  When he got out he went to college, earned a four year degree in computer science from Georgia Tech and then worked on his Masters from UGA , he is just a couple classes short from finishing it.  He is fed up with his current life and wants to hit the A-Stan.  He seems physically fit and his mental attitude is good.  He figures with his education he should qualify for some officers program or some option for commission, but when he contacted the Atlanta recruiters office they told him he was:

Too old for active duty and not eligible for office status.  Anyone here care to comment on either?

Did he tell them he was Prior Service? Cut off is 40, but they deduct Active Duty time from your age. (Or at least that is the way it worked when I went back in) As far as Officer requirements go, I have no clue. It may well be he would be "too old" for Officer status.
Pretty sure a Bachelors got you E-4 coming in the door though.

Yes, he took in his DD214 and showed his qualifications as well as his discharge status and education.    It was like the recruiter wasn't interested because the guy said he wanted to be an officer.

There are recruiters that are specifically tasked for OCS candidates.

Tell him to go see a Guard recruiter.

Not necessarily.  Any recruiting office should be able to process an application for OCS.  He is not too old to enlist, based on his prior service, but he is too old to be an officer.  And yes, he'd get E4 for having an undergrad degree.

Does he have to go through a recruiter?  What other vehicles are available?

Also, there is  third option: How about Warrant rank?

All the way, sir!!!

Interesting.  I was unaware that the military would prefer youthful untempered officers over mature level headed educated officers. Especially those with prior enlisted service.  Speaks volumes.   Glad I'm out.

If I was a fresh troop headed into Iraq or A-Stan  or a Platoon Sgt I'd rather serve under a LT with six years experience enlisted and a college degree and 15 years business experience working well with others than six months ROTC reserve duty and a fresh degree.  But then thats just the common sense in me.  I forgot the military lost that sometime around Nam.
