British MoD reconsiders sending Prince to Iraq:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070426/en_afp/britainroyalsharry

My take:  Yes, there's a risk, but risk is what soldiering is all about.  If the Brits are reluctant to send Harry, what they will be saying (whether they realize it or not) is that his life is somehow more important than Lieutenant Joe Blow from Birmingham.

If the MoD persists in dropping Harry from the deployment, I hope the next phone call they get is from Her Majesty, the Queen.

Sounds like Harry wants to walk in the footsteps of his namesake, Henry of the Plantagenets.

He is 3rd in line for the Throne. During WWII there was the "Last surviving Son" thingy. It didn't keep them out of the Army, or being deployed, just from serving in a Combat Zone. So I guess there are valid reasons for not sending some Men into Battle. In Prince Harry's stituation, I haven't really drawn an opinion, something unsual for me, or maybe it's because I don't give a shit what they do with him.

That would be the Sullivan Act, RJ.

Imo, there are a lot more in line for the throne and his being 3rd doesn't make a difference. He signed up, he wants to do his job, let him.

Yes, but that provision could be waived by the soldier in question.  IOW, the soldier could invoke that if he didn't want to get sent to the combat zone, but if he did want to deploy there, the act wouldn't prevent it.

Didn't Prince Charles' brother pilot a combat helicopter during the Falkland ordeal for the Royal Navy?  I am pretty sure he did.  I agree, the Brit's seem to have a better history of serving from a higher or "glass palace" position - they used to walk the talk.  Unfortunately, our US Senators and Congressmen have for the most part kept their family members out of it - pretty sad.  If we are to stand behind our troops as a nation, than the right message to send is that there is no political heirarchy when it comes to serving your country - everyone should pull their weight, not just our multiple tour veterans from Chugwater, Wyoming and similar small town America locations.  I am surprised, that isn't how I am used to seeing the Brit's roll, I would expect that they would fight for country before self preservation, besides, if their concern is that he will endanger his fellow troops, if I am not mistaken, every military unit around has a comraderie that would accept any such obstacle as long as he is by their side when the proverbial sh*@ hits the fan.  My $0.02 anyway.

I think the concern is that those he serves with will be at increased risk by his presence. I could care less about him being 3rd in line to the throne or whatever, but if it is going to put others at unnecesary risk then I would say he shouldn't go. Plus I read somewhere (though I don't know if its true or not) that a detachment of SAS would have to be deployed with him to essentially act as bodyguards
