I just didn't think they'd actually use it in a hot situation because they're so afraid to lose one, high $$.
But Ertman makes a great case. The Rangers CH-47 that got shot down in the mts of Astan took fire at relatively close range, and they had onboard firepower to cover more than just their rear.

I'll do pushups. I haven't done them yet today anyways.
I'd still like to fly in one. I got to sit in the simulator once while the guys at ACETEF let their kids fly it.

I lack people-skills.

Hey ERTMAN,

Is that a fastrope hook over your head in Photo #1?

Yes it is.

Some Marine Pilots and Crews Refer to those aircraft as "Thunder Chickens."  While the land-based airfields can accommodate the transport’s huge rotors and wings, the tight confines of a carrier deck prove a difficult fit compared to the smaller Sea Knight.  The controversy raged in Congress in 2001 over this "pork project" as some senators called it.  The marines will use whatever weapon system they are delivered.  By their nature, they will adapt and succeed.  It is to their credit.  However, it is a shame that they must do with "whatever" instead of the best.  What if paratroopers had to deal with such odds early on in deployment of their gliders and landing apparatus?

The CH-46 was not loved by all, but will it prove to have been a better aircraft that the Osprey.  Time will tell us all and I fear shortly instead of the long run.  But hindsight is always clearer than the crystal ball.  The best non-partisan document I have read on this project is called "v-22 Osprey: Wonder-Weapon or Widow Maker?  They warned us but no one is listening.  By Lee Gaillard  http://www.cdi.org/PDFs/Gailliard%20on%20V-22.pdf  This is the World Security Institute for Defense Information.  The document is long, but a very good read.

Scary read... I am rather disturbed that the Osprey program is proceeding despite every indication that it is a disaster.

"The degenerative and loony should never be denigrated but, rather, thanked. In their absence, the rest of you would be obliged to fill congressional seats... positions naturally unsavory to the sane and honorable."
