I remember when the first LRSU units were activated in Germany in the late 80's. I think we had E/51st guys on some of the exercises 1st AD went on in 88-89. I know our 1st AD LRSU was activated 87 or 88, I remember seeing them at Hohenfels.

| LRS has to change with the times...if not we don't need them. Maybe we need to go back to pure Ranger companies with leaders trained in RSLC as one of their METL.

That may be just the right thing to do. I can't imagine not having a need for a small, highly trained unit with specializations Raids, ambushes, reconnaissance, surveillance, BDAs, target aquisition, airfield seizures, pathfinding duites, and much more. Even missions other than war for the NG units - like counter drug. Small units lke LRS / Ranger companies will always serve a legitimate and needed purpose in my opinion. I really hate to see LRS getting downsized. ~

I know it was in existence when I got to the 3rd ID in late '83... Don't recall it's actual designation though. And it wasn't on jump-status but you did have to be Airborne qualified to be a member of the company

| I think the 3rd ID's LRSD in the early 1980s was called Troop E, 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry. It was part of the division's cavalry squadron. At home I may still have a copy of an old Stars & Stripes article on the unit filed away. Prior to that role, the unit had served as a pathfinder unit. About 25 years ago I received a letter from an E-6 in the unit that included an unofficial scroll-type patch and he noted the unit would be changing to a LRRP mission (the term LRS was not yet in general use).

| RD: I believe the "LRSU" concept was a little later than that. We (1st AD) got our first LRS detachment in 88 or maybe 89. I remember it because I was in the G2 and LRS was considered an MI asset, so we had to go to conferences where the capabilities and limitations of LRS were discussed. Our Collection Management section had to figure out how to put the LRS onto their collection matrix and what intel gaps they could fill. Around that time (the Cold War was still going on) I think the idea was that the LRS units would go into hiding and act as "stay behinds" as the Commie Hordes invaded. For that reason, the were not on jump status in 1st AD (though they all had to be airborne qualified.) I believe that they initially put the LRS Detachment into the 501st MI Battalion. It became clear pretty quickly that having an infantry detachment in an MI unit was not a good idea and by the time I got to my next Division HQs (2nd ID in Korea, 1991) they had moved the Divisional LRS detachment into the divisional Cav squadron.
