Trading "back-in-the-day" stories with fellow 509er. Okay can't resist with two Mainz era generation stories. Both of these happened during FTX when we were the OPFOR guys, don't recall the BLUEFOR unit. A 509er captured, taken back to BLUEFOR CP for integration, officer couldn't get anything out of him. They tied him up to tree/post and it started to rain. The 509er told the guard that he was ready to talk to the officer with info. The guard sent for the officer, making him get up out of his nice bed in his tent. (We hardly ever did tents, only stayed in a tent twice during my 2 plus years). Anyhow the officer comes over to the 509er, getting wet doing so, and asked the 509er what info he was ready to provide. The 509er said "Sir, it's raining!" and that was all he had to say. Second incident, two 509ers where captured and they had their hands secured but not their feet. They were in the back of a Jeep (M-151 I think was the NOM) anyhow one stood up said Airborne and un-assed the Jeep attempting to do a proper PLF. The BLUEFOR Soldiers were shocked, they stopped the Jeep to re-capture the jumper. Of course they both exited the Jeep, leaving the other 509er un-guarded. Yep, the 509er left in the Jeep, took off with the Jeep. When I heard this I LMAO!
"American Parachutists...devils in baggy pants...are less than 100 meters from my outpost line. I can't sleep at night; they pop up from nowhere and we never know when or how they will strike next. Seems like the black-hearted devils are everywhere..." (An entry in a German officer's diary found after the Battle of Anzio)

Is this the one you mean?? That would be the Third Brigade of the 8th ID. The 509th in Mainz was part of the 1st Brigade.
