We all get impressed when those certain anniversaries come along. The fives are big, but the tens are bigger. This year is forty years since 1967 and for me will and does mark a number of forty year anniversaries. I swore in at Fort Wayne Reception Center in Detroit (now a museum) on Jan 27, 1967. Took Basic at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, then in April of 1967 I went to Fort Huachuca in Arizona for radio school (three dits, four dits, two dits, and a dah). I had met a girl in Sept of 1966 that I dated for a bit before going in the Army and then wrote to frequently for several months while away. I came home on leave in May and we dated steadily before I went to Fort Gordon, Georgia in June. More radio school but this time it was radio teletype. That's where I learned to type but the old Army teletypes only had three rows of keys and to this day I can't use the number row without looking. I also can't remember exactly when I graduated from Jump School. I went there after RTT school and I think it was towards the end of September of 1967. I spent a week in a holdover company and went through RVN (?) School which was the first time I even saw an M-16. I remember that I qualified Expert with it because I was quite proud of that. Early in October I came home on leave and on October 14, 1967 I married that girl I had been dating for just about a year. I thank God that 40 years later we are still married. I left home on the 5th of November and was in Dak To with the 173rd Airborne a week or so later. So this year is a memorable one for me as well as one full of reminders.

Grouchy Hippo (4/7/2007) We all get impressed when those certain anniversaries come along. The fives are big, but the tens are bigger. This year is forty years since 1967 and for me will and does mark a number of forty year anniversaries. I swore in at Fort Wayne Reception Center in Detroit (now a museum) on Jan 27, 1967. I left home on the 5th of November and was in Dak To with the 173rd Airborne a week or so later. So this year is a memorable one for me as well as one full of reminders.Congratulations, your post brings back a lot of memories for me.I got out of 82 nd the same time you went in In .April of 67β I turned 22 but felt 32: as I was attending jr. college with anti-war protesters and draft card burners. At that time I was receiving letters from old buddies who were now in VN with the 173th,101, and 1st cav.By Sept. 67 I had lost 2 friends in the 173rd. and one in the 101.Was unhappy in school and felt guilty as hell for being at home. Was going back in the Army in Oct. 67β but met a wonderful girl at a friends wedding and never signed the reenlistment papers. We were married on June 15,1968.So I have #39 coming up. You met your wife Sept.66β, that was the month I finally left the Dom.Rep., My wife picked out June 15th, which seemed strange to me because on June 15, 1965 the 82 nd. Took 14 city blocks of the rebel zone in Santo Domingo and we lost 5 men.( Ted should remember that day ) Anyway the best to you βand if my wife can put up with me for another 14 months , I may make it to 40 years also.

Congrats Grouchy! My wife and I are just hitting our fifth anniversary so we have quite a ways to go to catch up with you...
