| Blacksmith6's comments are a most welcomed viewpoint. And as it should be. However, addressing the issues being raised "behind" the troops, relating to equiping the military for the future. The so-called "supplementals" that Congress has periodically passed for Iraq, don't pay the bill on the equipment costs that are being incurred by the US military services. All the services have been "robbing Peter to pay Paul," in that respect. Nonetheless, we under a new Secretary of Defense and it is getting close to appropriations time in the new Congress, and it is my belief that the military services will be more "honest" about their real needs for the upcoming budget as indicated in the following links below. Of interest to me was a phamplet put out by the Ga. Guard explaining the re-alignment of units throughout the state through about 2018. The phamplet explaines to Soldiers that some units are going away and that they may have to reclass voluntarily or involuntarily but of major importance...at least to me was that they are projecting a LRS company being added and starting about 2010 the beginings of another SF Bn, with a company added every other year till about 2018 when the Support company and HHD would come on line. Between the numbers of personnel and specialized equipment that is a huge increase and requirement for resources! My guess is the Navy and Air Force will continue to downsize and have projects de-funded while that money is transfered to make up for losses and shortages in the Army's budget.
Stand in the door!

| I remember shortly after the 1st Gulf War, I was PCS'd to a Leg unit at Ft. Carson. Our equipment was in a sad state of repair, many deadlined vehicles and pieces of equipment due to canibalization from re-deployment home. Our battle readiness rating was dismal as a result, our budget was very low to replace and repair these vehicles. Our maintenance Warrant found a loop hole - he would take a few low-boys with driver & shotgun on a TDY trip to Tooele Army Depot, as a Pompkus site it had many vehicles at full readiness and was able to sell these vehicles to our unit at a minimal price. We would bring a whole Hummer back and canabalize it for parts and attatch them to our assigned vehicles, we then would send these troopers back TDY and sell the skeleton frame back to the Army Depot for pretty close to what we bought it for all on Army paer and books. Inside of 3 months, we were able to bring the readiness rating up one letter, within 6 months we were at full equipment readiness (Sgt Bilko, eat your heart out!). If this is still a loophole and provided it has not been depleted, it may be a good alternative under the radar. I do not know how far the equipment roster drills down (i.e. generators, radios etc..) My $.02 anyway.

| Dale, is the new battalion for the 20th going to be organized like the other battalions(companies with A Detachments) or will it be a Group Support Battalion like the active duty groups have added? Wiley, my guess is the option you outline is generally not available now. When the Army was drawing down there were a lot of extra vehicles which to canabalize. But after five plus years of combat operations in some of the most inhospitable terrain the military's options now is probably to have more vehicles built. Add to that the fact that the Army has been expanding for the last three years or so.
