Air Force officials are moving forward with the Airman Battle Uniform roll-out and plans for a new service dress coat. The new ABU, designed to eventually replace both the Battle Dress and Desert Combat Uniforms worn by Airmen, is currently in full production. Early deliveries of ABU inventories in 2007 are earmarked for issue to a select group of deployers for Air Expeditionary Force 7 and 8. Distribution plans also have the ABU replacing the BDU in the initial clothing bag at Basic Military Training in early fall. Production expectations at this time support plans to have the ABU available for purchase in many Military Clothing Sales Stores later this year, with AAFES-wide availability in early 2008.

Which one did they finally decide to go with? The blue tiger-stripes with the USMC 8-pointed hat?

Awwwww JR aren't you sweet????? Personally as a flyer, I'd wish the AF would adopt the Armys Flight BDU........My ramp pajamas are not the best suited for my type of work. But politics instead of common sense play on this issue. They DX'd the 8 pointed hat and muted the tiger stripes. We'll still like the the joke of the week in the eyes of the other services. The board ignored the requests to put pockets on the sleeves like the other branches, simply because they wanted to keep the enlisted stripes there instead of adopting what EVERYOTHER FRICKIN' BRANCH has and that is rank insignia on the collar or in the case of the Army, on the chest (IMO a stupid place too). Buuuuuuuuuuuut, the good news is that they did put pocket sleeves on the new gortex JACKET!!! So you can use those wearing body armor and full battle rattle in the summer of Iraq!!! hey we are thinking of YOU!!!!

It is interesting to me that when this war started all of the branches of the service were wearing essentially the same uniform with a few minor adjustments of aftermarket attachments. Now that we've been fighting for 6 1/2 years all the branches are wearing different uniforms than they started with. That has got to make contractors happy but seems like a stange place to have the focus.
