For my upcoming trip to Atlanta I was looking for the cheapest fare from Chicago. I found Airtran had a good web special but then I looked and heard about www.farecast.com which advised a wait. I held off and now the cheaper "web fares" have gone up and I started to look harder at farecast and noticed that it based everything on the higher priced standard tickets.

Its still saying to hold off and there will be a price drop and Im wondering if I should lock in the lower fare or when the standard seat tickets go down, I might have a shot at the other fares adjusting at some percentage.

Anyone here fly quite a bit and have experience about when is the best time to buy. Ive heard 21 days prior to the flight is the sweet spot which means Im close to that time but of course, dont want to get hosed.

Bro...you know how much I fly in my civilian job. Take it from me. Anything less than 21 days out will cost you more. Go for the cheapest that you can find outside the 21 day window. There is usually not much difference between 21-30 days out.

Buying as early as possible has always worked well for me...
