I just got a call from one of my workers mothers.  He was in a serious car accident on Saturday night due to the huge amount of freezing rain we received.  SOME of his injuries are: broken back, massive internal injuries, ruptured diaphram and collaspe lungs.  He is in another surgery now and is looking at a possible 12 week recovery, back brace and all.  Please send out a few prayers for him.  He is 20 years old and joined our company this past October.

Pulled his file.  He was eligible for our insurance January 1st, but passed on it.  All he needed to pay was $10/pay period and a $100 deductable.  He passed and so he is in ICU with no insurance.  We are taking up a collection, but dang, this is why we try to get our employees on at least one of our medical plans.

Well hell... that decision is really going to hurt his chances of fully recuperating if he makes it.

Yeah unfortunetely when you are 20-some years old you just don't think you need medical insurance or anything like that... I was like that myself and learned that lesson the hard way when I had some major medical issues in my early 30's... Took me a long time to work myself out of that debt.

Currently, in my company its mandatory to take at least the minimum coverage offered. If you sign up for nothing, then it defaults to the minimum unless you have proof of other coverage

Best wishes to the guy, I hope everything works out

Under federal law, you cannot force someone to take insurance.  You need to have a signed waiver or acceptance form on everyone who is eligible.  A lot of people say theat they never get sick, but this is a good example of an accident gone wrong.  We have two plans.  One would be $22.50/pay and the other $10/pay.  Either way, he would be covered and his medical bills would be minimal.  Since he is living at home, but not in  school his parents cannot cover him either.

He is having problems at the hospital.  I spoke to the patient advocate and without divulging much info to me due to HIPAA requirements, I learned that it will be a long road to even get to physical therapy.

In Mas. now, they have passed a Law requiring all residents of the State to have health insurance. Not sure how that will work, but we see why that is with this case.
Hope he recovers.
