| I have a soldier stationed with me in Mosul, Iraq. He is national guard and wants to go active regular army. He has already asked his national guard retention nco who did not know the answer. In addition, the active duty retention nco for this unit has been sent home so that is no help. I need some help with some good info or some good links that can help me guide this kid. Thanks in advance.

Send me a PM with some info. I have a good buddy who was prior active duty (82nd in Panama and Desert Storm), and has been doing what we call Guard Bum tours since 9/11. While in Kosovo in 2004, he somehow wrangled back onto active duty in his reserve rank (MSG!). After his tour there, he ended up at Ft. Bliss as part of the 1st CAV and is now in Iraq for his tour. I will attempt to hook these two up, at least electronically, to see how it can happen. If the soldier is already on active duty, I am sure he will have to finish the current tour, but MAY be able to enlist/re-enlist for active duty prior to refrad. Just my 2 cents.

| If a guy wants to change from the reserves to active duty, the primary document needed is a letter of release from their current command. Take that to a recruiter, and the active enlistment goes from there. I imagine it would be very similar going from NG to active too. I'm not certain on the army deciding to make him finish out his current tour; the Army may see an immediate need for his MOS/rank and he could get pulled early. That's not a good incentive to get your commander to sign the letter of release, but most reserve commanders I saw on recruiting duty were good about it. Usually the most important thing for prior enlistees is what their rank will be when they jump back into active status. It's common to have to take off a stripe, so if he's an NCO, he might have to do that. All depends on his current rank.

Heres something else you may want to be aware of. If he received any money for college he may have to pay it all back. Its in the contract.
