Austria distances itself from rifles row
Audio: Revelation makes US action against Iran more likely, says Thomas Harding
Austrian sniper rifles that were exported to Iran have been discovered in the hands of Iraqi terrorists, The Daily Telegraph has learned.

The Steyr HS50 is a long range, high precision rifle
More than 100 of the.50 calibre weapons, capable of penetrating body armour, have been discovered by American troops during raids.

The guns were part of a shipment of 800 rifles that the Austrian company, Steyr-Mannlicher, exported legally to Iran last year.

The sale was condemned in Washington and London because officials were worried that the weapons would be used by insurgents against British and American troops.

Within 45 days of the first HS50 Steyr Mannlicher rifles arriving in Iran, an American officer in an armoured vehicle was shot dead by an Iraqi insurgent using the weapon.

advertisementOver the last six months American forces have found small caches of the £10,000 rifles but in the last 24 hours a raid in Baghdad brought the total to more than 100, US defence sources reported.

The find is the latest in a series of discoveries that indicate that Teheran is providing support to Iraq's Shia insurgents.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, yesterday denied that Iran had supplied weapons to Iraqi insurgents. But on Sunday US officials in Baghdad displayed a range of weapons they claimed had originated in Iran.

They said 170 American and British soldiers had been killed by such weapons.

The discovery of the sniper rifles will further encourage those in Washington who want to see Iran's uranium-enriching facilities destroyed before a nuclear weapon is produced.

The Foreign Office expressed "serious concerns" over the sale of the rifles last year and Britain protested to the Austrian government.

A Foreign Office spokesman said last night: "Although we did make our worries known the sale unfortunately went ahead and now the potential that these weapons could fall into the wrong hands appears to have happened."

The rifle can pierce all body armour from up to a mile and penetrate armoured Humvee troop carriers.

It is highly accurate and fires a round called an armour piercing incendiary, a bullet that the Iranians manufacture.

The National Iranian Police Organisation bought the rifles allegedly to use them against drug smugglers in an £8 million order placed with Steyr in 2005.

The company was given permission to export them by the Austrian government, which is not a Nato member.

In March of 2005 Iran began producing its own .armor piercing 50 cal sniper rifle:  See http://www.israelnationalnews.com/news.php3?id=77700  It was based on this weapon I believe, so we have known for two years that the weapon would fall into the hands of the Iraqi.  Buy technology, rip it off, and then...  We made the same mistakes, wasn't Iran our arms technology buyer prior to 1980?  We sold them real technology, including the stuff they are using now against us in Iraq.

A rifle like this you just don't take it out of the box and figure out how to shoot it, it requires someone with sniper expierence to train you.

Training facilities just inside the Iranian border are visible on Google Earth so I seriously doubt we do not maintain an extensive target list.

Talking with Iran at this point is like playing classical music for the yellow jacket nest on the eaves of your porch... eventually it accomplishes nothing and you are required to eradicate it with extreme prejudice.

"The degenerative and loony should never be denigrated but, rather, thanked. In their absence, the rest of you would be obliged to fill congressional seats... positions naturally unsavory to the sane and honorable."

Steve, Iran is carrying on with its agenda and is basically in our face about.

During 'Nam if the insurgency would have not been supplied by China and the USSR the outcome could have been different.

During the Soviet Afghan adventure of the '80s if we would have not supplied/trained the insurgency could the outcome have been different?

Now for us in Iraq the insurgency is being trained/supplied by Iran and Syria...what will this outcome be?

I never liked Austria anyway, even less when they made me get off the bus and walk 16 klicks back to the hotel in Berchesgarden. I say we just embargo them and refuse any business dealings and keep their citizens from visiting the US...next Iran...easy we take away their ability to use any technology above that of say 1950 by detonating an EMP pulse above their largest cities. They'll be too busy trying to repair their power grid and infastructure to cause us many problems. I'd tell Syria that unless they quit assisting the insurgency they will be the next to experience pre-electronics exsistance. We really have to do the things that a Superpower is capapble of doing and stop letting the liberals and anti-US crowd pummel us. We don't eat crap...we force other countries to eat crap!

Stand in the door!
