| Gents, SSG Leija was from Houston and was 27. I learned about him on a BBC report in which his squad was shadowing another ING squad during urban ops in what it seemed to be Sadr City. One minute he was talking to an embedded BBC reporter...next thing he is down from a tango sniper bullet. If it was Sadr City that is encouraging since it was over due for us to start going after militias there. SSG Leija was with the 1/23 Inf Reg, 3rd Bde [SBCT], 2nd ID At this link he is casualty #69 http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ops/iraq_casualties_current.htm KIA on 24 January Here you can read messages left to him by his friends http://www.myspace.com/leija scroll down to see them... Below a pic of SSG Leija with another SBCT trooper [Leija is on the left]
RIP trooper Leija Now his squad hooahs need to find the asswipe...like the one below...that took him out...

RIP, Soldier.

Maliki should be in chains next to Sadr...

khyros (1/30/2007) Maliki should be in chains next to Sadr...Steve, if he keeps holding out for Shiite tangos and their leader that is exactly what should happen to him...PM or not.

tomahawk6 (1/30/2007) Found a video of the building sweep where SSG Leija got hit. Very surreal.TH6...you see that!? It had the same impression on me. One minute he is there calmly talking to the embedded reporter and next thing one of his joes is calling out that he is down. He was wearing his "mich" helmet [ACH] so I wonder what happened? The footage I saw also showed an aid and litter team taking him away with a visible wound on the side of his head. The report said he was still alive during the CASEVAC but he later died. The price of freedom. RIP

| He stood in a window and a sniper in another building got him. A tough lesson for the rest of his troops.

tomahawk6 (1/30/2007) He stood in a window and a sniper in another building got him. A tough lesson for the rest of his troops.A typical mistake during urban ops going back to WW2. That one is even in all the MOUT manuals I've read. During cordon and searches over there I always reminded my hooahs about that basic stuff. RIP
