I am planning on enlisting in the Army Reserve's Split Op program. I am a junior in High School. I talked to a recruiter in school and he told me about how I can attend basic training this summer, come back and finish my senior year, and following graduation I will go to AIT and finish my training from there. I filled out a card and told them to contact me as soon as possible. I turn 17 on Feb 23 and would like to get in touch ASAP. Has anyone had any experience in the split op. Was it a good choice? Any insight or advice would be appreciated thanks.

My Son did the slpit ship op. He went to Basic during the Summer between 11 and 12th grade. Came home finished High School then went to AIT during that Summer. Man did I see a change in him after he came home from Basic and he had a GREAT senior year BB Star, Football Star even had the perverbial Cheerleader girlfriend and good grades to boot.

That was 5 years ago. Now he is a Combat Vet Sgt on his way to being a DI. It worked out for him.

Why do you want to be a Reservest instead of Active?

Here is a shot of my "Boy". Yep he is a LEG but he was born @ Womak!

I'll toss in my $.02 just for fun. I've been in about six months, so I can't tell you how life is after training. I can, however, tell you that you that split-ops guys act differently. Going from basic, back to a civillian life, then back to AIT (which, depending on your MOS, can be just as much of a pain in the rear as basic), kinda leaves them at a slight disadvantage. They'll slack off on PT when they're on their off time, they re-acclimate to the softer civvy lifestyle, and they have a little harder time getting back into the grind. Some decide soon after hitting AIT that they want out.

That said, if you can keep your head screwed on straight while you polish off your high school sentence, you should be ok. Just remember what your PT in basic was like (including frequent smokings, because even my fat ass thought morning PT was too little to get everyone into shape), and keep on it while you're away. Don't do anything stupid involving drugs, alcohol, cars, women, tattoo guns, animals, the police, et c., and remember that you'll stand out a little more in a crowd, even if you don't think you do.

All that said, what MOS are you going for?

Oh, right. Uh, go airborne! Demand it in your contract! Tell the guy at MEPS you'll walk out the door if it's not in the contract. If you don't, you'll be competing against other people trying to get a slot, and that can be very, very difficult depending on your MOS and other fun things.

Everyone I know that did split option, it wokred out well for them. Like Steve said, you gotta stay with the PT, otherwise you'll be in for culture shock when you return, for AIT.  A friend in high school did split ops, and drilled with a Reserve Unit in between.  Last I checked he was a SSG, 13 something, with nearly 15 years in.

Like all new MEPS, soldiers to be, I agree with what's already been said.  Have a firm idea of what you want to do in the Army and go to MEPS with that.  I got up and started to leave when they would'nt make concessions toward my intended MOS.

I started out many, many years ago as a split op.  I did the BT after my junior year and then went to AIT after graduation.  I had always wanted to go active duty and to be in the military, this was the quickest way I saw at the time to do just that.  After AIT and returning to my Reserve unit, I believe I had to be in that unit for 6 months and then I met the minimum obligation to be released for active duty.  When I did this it was a new enlistment through MEPS, retook ASVAB and the whole works...I kept my old MOS (but was offered others and I got Airborne school - SCORE!).  For me it was an early start on the life I wanted.  It gave me a little scratch to make a car payment (I miss those $125 car payments).  Good luck.

I could have done the split option but wanted to get the suckage of BT and AIT all out of the way at once.  I didn't ask my recruiter about Airborne when I joined, or how to get it and it took me 18 years to get to BAC. I know it had to have been easier at 18 than it was at 36 years old.

figger out what you want and go for it with a clear focus
