Ladies and Gents, she was lieutenant Kara Spears Hultgreen born in Connecticut [1965], was KIA while attempting a landing on the USS Abraham Lincoln [1994].

She first flew this bird http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-6_intruder , call sign: "Incredible Hulk" [her last name had something to do with that one]

Out of personal ambition she moved on to this bird http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-14_Tomcat , call sign: "Revlon" [something to do with her wearing makeup]  Kara wanted to be an astronaut.

At this link it explains what happened during her crash which she did not survive but her RIO did [both ejected only one survived].

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kara_Spears_Hultgreen

Because she was the first female fighter pilot in the history of the USN there is a lot of controversy regarding the crash and her death.  At the above link read about her Death, Investigation, and Reaction and you'll see why.  It was a $30M bird and the navy also spent $100K to recover her body and the bird which sunk in over 3,000 fsw.

Some claimed that she was fine flying the Intruder and that in her case the transition to the Tomcat cockpit was a difficult one.  Some claimed there was pressure to pass her along despite serious deficiencies in handling the sheer cockpit workload in the F-14.

Steve and all...comments please.

There are some in Naval Aviation that believe that she was unqualified to be a fighter pilot.

Ert, if she did screw up during that approach at least her RIO survived.  Things happened fast but some say that she also failed to inform her RIO of what was going on...he eventually decided to punch out on his own...saved his own life by doing so.  She also punched out seconds later but instead of up...into the ocean killing her instantly.  RIP

Rey....it was meant to give a little cross section of just some of what goes on in making a good documentary and how a cast isn't always just some character's drummed up in hollyweird!

LTJG Meagan Kohr flew the last Tomcat in combat over Iraq off of USS Teddy Roosevelt (CVN 71) and will be put in the National Museum of Naval Aviation I believe. I don't think the Tom has been installed in the museum as yet.

Great Great, Documentary, I could watch it all day, But Most of all I would like to send Personal Messages to Jay and Meagan, for flying CAS(Close Air Support) for me and my fellow troops during OIF, I was a Scout/Sniper with the 3rd Infantry Divison in Iraq from 04' to 05' fair winds and following seas to the Tomcat and have fun in the super hornet.

Sincerely,
Eugene

SMSB, got ya!  The "Toms" were retired last year so it would make sense they would do that with her bird.

BTW, in August of last year we discussed the Tomcat's retirement here:
