| Aircraft Carrier to be Named After Ford Associated Press January 04, 2007 WASHINGTON - The Navy will name its next aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford in honor of the president who was laid to rest Wednesday in his home town of Grand Rapids, Mich., officials said. The Navy had not planned to make the announcement yet, but Donald H. Rumsfeld, the former defense secretary who served in the Ford administration, divulged the news during his eulogy at the funeral. "How fitting it would be that the name Gerald R. Ford will patrol the high seas for decades to come in defense of the nation he loved so much," he said. Later at the Pentagon the Navy confirmed that it would make an official announcement "in a few weeks." It said it was still working on details of the ceremony with members of the Ford family. Ford served in the Navy during World War II.
- "Hundreds of thousands of American servicemen and women are deployed across the world in the war on terror. By bringing hope to the oppressed, and delivering justice to the violent, they are making America more secure. "
George W. Bush

Will the Sailors assigned to the USS Ford be referred to as "Gerry's kids"?

| Pfttt...fix or repair daily will be more like it! Rumsfeld should have been paying more attention to all the kids he sent into Iraq with no body armor or up-armored Humvees, rather than ensuring his old boss and mentor got a ship named after him.

I just hope the new vessel won't turn out to be as clumsy and accident prone as it's namesake.

| Btw, the Nimitz-class carriers are going on 35-years old as a class (the Nimitz was launched in '72) They've been working on a new carrier design, but I'm not sure how far it has advanced or if there are any ships on order

CVX is the next carrier... not named yet... it is not a Nimitz, technically, the Ford is one in appearence only as it posseses technology undreamt of when the first of the class slipped into the drink.
