Army shrinks after soldiers quit The overall number of soldiers in the British army has fallen despite record sums being spent on recruitment, official figures show. In 2006 £89m was spent on recruiting - an increase of just over £3.5m on the previous year. There were more than 12,700 new recruits this year- but almost 14,500 personnel left the service. The figures were revealed in a written parliamentary answer by Defence Minister Derek Twigg. Despite the high number of soldiers leaving the Army, the number recruited in 2006 shows an increase of about 1,000 on last year. The trained strength of the Army currently stands at 95,560. Shadow defence secretary Liam Fox said: "The government is throwing money at recruitment in a desperate attempt to keep up numbers. "They should be focusing on the retention crisis, which sees some of the most skilled and experienced soldiers quitting the Army," he said. Shorter gaps between tours of duty and concerns over kit, pay and allowances were starting to hit morale and adding further pressure on service families, he went on. | RR - the truth is in the last few lines of the posted article - main gripe is with Kit - then pay/allowances,and of course in the Airborne Community - insufficient time for training new Paratroopers to 'fit in' - we need guys to do a few Exercises, which in OUR depleted Force is just not possible,as we are always 'on-point' or pulling B'liars burning ass outta the fire - again. Added to which is the eternal NEGATIVE attitude of Recruiting Office Staff - who try their damndest to STOP new recruits wanting to join The Parachute Regiment... The stories told about tricks and ploys used, to get recruits to '..just sign this here..' are legion - unless there is an 'On Duty' Paratrooper in that office - we lose him. The problem (of the Govt's own making) over the NON-issue of vital kit to front line Troops, has not helped at all - as it's been broadcast loud and clear across the newspapers and TV...paradoxically the successes of 3 PARA Brigade produced a rush of recruits..(!)and many ex-PARAS have been busy spreading the word - you want a hassle free enlistment in the PARAS ? - Go to Colchester - direct ! (It's the new Home of the PARAS) as there's a Recruiting Office there also. RR.the phrase that comes to mind is an Old one'..hoist with their own Petard..'
DEATH,IS ANOTHER WAY OF SAYING - - YOU FAILED SELECTION.
