Just wanted to share a cool AF picture that shows kind of a cool juxtaposition of one strategic asset over another.

As some of you may know, I've recently developed an interest in the history of ICBMs in the US.  Have found a bunch of stuff on the internet including what has to be one of the best time-wasting sites out there, this one:

http://asuwlink.uwyo.edu/~jimkirk/sites.html

The site gives the location and in most cases, includes an aerial (via Terraserver) photograph of every missile silo in the US (and there are 1,231 of them, although only 500 are active.)

Anyway, the photo of Minuteman Silo K-4 near Belle Fourche, South Dakota revealed this:

The rectangular white area in the upper center of the photo is the silo.  But look closer.  about 2" to the right of the silo, the satellite taking the picture just happened to catch a B-1 bomber flying over!  Now look at the bottom left corner - there's the wingman!

As I said, this was not some kind of staged publicity photo but an odd coincidence that the Terraserver cameras happened to catch.

To see a better picture go to this page:  http://asuwlink.uwyo.edu/~jimkirk/ellsworth.html

And scroll down to K-4.

All 150 Minuteman sites (and the 15 Launch Control facilities) at Ellsworth were decommissioned in the 1990's, the missiles and warheads were removed and in some cases the silos themselves were dynamited in order to prevent them from being used again.  The same fate fell to the 150 silos at Whiteman in Missouri, the 150 at Grand Forks, ND, and the 50 "Peacekeeper" sites in Wyoming were emptied but have not been demilitarized or deactivated.

The National Park Service will be turning one Minuteman Silo and one Launch Control Center into National Historic Sites in the coming years.

Up near where I live, is the old Nike ring around Pittsburgh. Defended the city against the Bear in the 50s and 60s. With nuclear tipped air defense missles!!!

Oakdale was their contolling radar center. I am still looking for the silos. One is near some property a friend of mine owns. The goverment used his property, or part of it as a buffer zone.

Cool hobby, Martin.

I am glad we never had to use them.

Al, does the government pay your friend for the buffer zone?

All the way, sir!!!

I read a few years back how some of the demilitarized Atlas missile silos were being marketed as eco-friendly homes. Constant temperature year round. LOTS of space. They we're pretty pricey on the order of $25 million, but imagine the home security.

Cool picture!! That is pretty wild the way it just happened to capture the two B-1s going by.

We had some here in Mass., not sure exactly where they were but I do know the general area. Knew some folks in the Guard who were part of the Nike Units here.

We had at least 2 outside of Roswell, but were closed down after the Strategic Air Command Base closed around 1968?

No big secret as the Ruskies knew more about the silo's in the US then the American citizens did living around them.

Atlas F's were deployed in squadrons of 12, so there are actually 12 silos in the Roswell area.  AFAIK all have been sold to private landowners.  A few years ago someone was killed falling into one of the 150-foot deep silos near Roswell.
