| I can vouch for that. I was in B company from May of 1974 thru September of 1976 and C company was never moved. I've heard over and over that it was but I'm here to tell you that as long as I was in Vicenza there was a C company in the battalion.

509Trooper (3/3/2007) The confusion exists because the Army's Center for Military History puts that out in its lineage and honors section. Those of us in the 509th during that time period know that no company was moved from Vicenza.Write them and tell them to fix it! http://www.army.mil/cmh/CAH2007/

CMH has their own way of doing things and they don't really take suggestions or comments from us peasants. Tried that with another thing involving unit histories and they weren't interested.

I've dug through the files at the Center of Military History on numerous occasions and the distinction between C-509th and Co C within 1-509th is clear. This was not an urban myth generated by the CMH, but was instead invented by others.
For those who wonder what this is all about, HHC, 1-509th perpetuates the lineage of Co A, 509th PIB during WW II. C-509th at Fort Rucker - and now HHC, 3-509th in AK - perpetuated the lineage of Co C, 509th PIB. HHC, 2-509th, active from 1963 to 1973 in Germany as part of the 1st Brigade (Abn), 8th Inf Div, perpetuated the lineage of old Co B, 509th PIB.
I've noticed that a great many Army unit websites, including the one for 1-509th at Fort Polk, contain erroneous historical information and cannot be relied upon by a serious researcher. Often they contain a mix of CMH material with what they would like their history to be.
The CMH is usually aware of historical myths promoted by units but unfortunately it is not in a position to do anything about them. They provide the correct information and it's up to others to use it wisely.

Hooah?

| Great print. My uncle was with the 509th at Oran (Company E). I was just talking to him about it yesterday (Sunday), as I had stopped by his house to pick up a few old photos to scan for him (actually for his daughter). He said he never got to jump at that one, though, as his plane was shot down. Glad to see that his unit is finally getting some recognition. BTW, this is only my second post, as I just found this site while researching his unit. Great site.

There may be some prints left for sale if your uncle is interested in one. I should find out by the end of the week so let me know.
