Check out the details at Army Times story.
They've come a long way from the monster camera/thermal imager on an M-4.
Why did they always put the bayonet on the damn thing. You have all this technology to see, hear, and kill a guy from around corners, but put a damn knife on the thing just in case.

DTW, very true. Plus that is not an M4, weight wise that is a freaking M240.

Ted (11/21/2006) Is the weapon that all that tecnology sitting on still an M16?Its an M4 which is basically a shortened M16A2 (Semi and 3 round burst only, no rock-n-roll). I think some SOF-types have a full-auto variant

| When the M-16 first came out, I called a "Mattel toy gun". It's sister was the AR-15. I remember being trained on the M-79 grenade launcher before it went with the troops to Nam. When did we put it under the M-16? It makes sense to do that so that the troop carrying it has some fire power as well.

Considering that my lil pda phone (an hp ipaq 6515) provides voice coms, GPS, has a 333mhz processor, 32 mb of ram, and over 120 mb of flash memory storage... all in a unit small enough to fit in my back pocket with ease and eight hours of juice in a rechargable battery... the landwarrior has a loooong way to go and is still a rather primitive design.

Ted, the M16/M203 started being fielded around 1970 or 1971. I don't think it was used much in Vietnam beyond some special ops troops.
