| I have been having a lot of problems here recently at work and even though I am trying to work on myself, I wonder if I am totally wrong here. I work for a local police department and at work i keep the Airborne mentality in all that I do. My hair is high and tight, uniform neat and clean, and take great pride in my work. The problem is that the others i work with are more interested in the rumors of the day and getting by than doing a quality job. I was pulled into an office last night because I wouldnt listen to my partner (who has been there longer than me) when she told me to do things HER way and not the way I was trained by my supervisor. During this meeting I apologized for the way that I acted and told them that a lot of my personality traits are a reflection of 10 years in the Army. To this my partner rolled her eyes and stated loudly "But Donald, this isnt the military". I am not asking them to conform to the Army way of doing things but I did tell them that they need to realize my past and that something you do for 10 years isnt going to go away in the 7 months I have been out. And also the fact that I dont want it to go away. My partner is in her 40s and about 350 pounds. Her uniform is faded and wrinkled and she always comes to work with the I hate this job attitude. She is the only one of the 4-5 patners I work with that I cant get along with. Everyone else allows me to be there without much conversation and we all focus on the task at hand without chatting about the days events. I am just trying to stay in my bubble here and maybe I am wrong. Should I let my hair grow out and stop caring? I had facial hair for the first couple months of getting out and one day looked in the mirror. The thought that came to me was that if I was representing my department to the public, that goatee I had looked VERY unprofessional. I am not bashing facial hair, but on me, I felt like my 1SG was looking over my shoulder getting ready to bring some smoke. Thanks for letting me vent, and I guess my reguest is how do I adjust and do i conform or maintain my standard that I have set for myself so long ago? I look forward to your input and trust the Airborne community will not steer me wrong as y'all havent yet.

If you are performing job based on the regulations and requirements of the position and as you were trained to, then I would tell Matilda the Hun to go F herself. But hey, that is just me. I understand you would have to be more tactful than that of course. Sounds like a pretty sad situation. I hope Matilda does not perform any duties involving actual Law Enforcement, sounds like she couldn't get out of her own way( without aid of an M-88 wrecker) nevermind aprehend a criminal. Be very careful with small town politics though, if she has been there a long time she probably has connections that she would use against you if you piss her off enough. You do not need to lower your standards though, you keep up your bearing and maintain the discipline you learned. Just because she is undisciplined and does not care about herself does not mean you have to adopt the same attitude in order to do your job well. Best of luck, keep your head held high! (Maybe look for oppurtunities in a more proffessional organisation)

Damned if it doesn't sound like we work for the same department!
I'm with the feds as a uniformed police officer, we just got our first appraisals under the Pay for Performance initiative (who in law enforcement sees a problem with having cops evaluated by Pay for Performance?). Now, I'm not an overachiever, I do my job, a lot better than most here, nad my ratings were mostly Highly Successful, and my pay increase was....................................0, zip, nada........., guess I don't kiss enough ass. Sorry for th eventing here.

You both have Military/Airborne training, that gives you an edge. Piss on the norm, maintain that edge, high, tight, always alert, and focused. Your Military training will carry you through when others who do not have it will faulter by the wayside.

| I'd say keep your high speed low drag ideals... dont worry about others conforming to them, just apply them to yourself and keep the attitude that you're keeping yourself to a higher standard. The key I think here is to make sure you do not communicate (verbally or non verbally) that you expect the same from them. That attitude is for the military where people dont get fired and you dont have a union involved. I think you're going through the very same pains as those who leave high speed active units and end up in low speed NG or Reserve groups... Ive heard it before tons of times where a trooper shows up spit shined, pressed with a high and tight and gets resented because the others lash out (mainly out of guilt for thier own poor performance and attention to detail). Remember that YOU are a paratrooper, one of the best troops in the US Army and that comes with certain qualities that others only WISH they had. Do not trade that in for a donut and hippie hair. Lastly... do your job the high speed low drag way... and then when your day is over, you come on up here to PNET and you vent because HERE is where you're family understands you and we're hear to help. Get it out up here and then drive on with the mission.

| Big Al has a good point... Ms 350 isnt going to be there when you get stuck chasing down a scumbag and find yourself alone... she's gonna be on a radio or clutching her chest after 10 yards. If they press the point too hard, you can just say that you're concerned that during a tense situation you will have to weigh an extra choice into how you carry out your job that COULD put you or even your partner into a dangerous situation. I hate it when I see a police officer that is grossly overweight.. it undermines the public trust and hell.. if I was a perp Id have to let them catch me rather than run away and risk the involuntary manslaughter charge when the officer died after 25 feet of a massive coronary.
